Anthocyanins have been used as part of therapeutic herbal folklore medicines with the phy to chemicals, because actually, bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) in Europe has been used to improve menstruation. During World War II, bilberry was also used to enhance the night vision of UK pilots. 

Mild toxic reactions are characterized by slight reduction of visual acuity, flickering of vision, color vision decrease, impaired night vision, tinnitus, weakness, or confusion. In more severe cases, symptoms consist of sudden complete loss of vision, dizziness, and even deafness. Coma with circulatory collapse characterizes the most severe form of quinine toxicity. Patients may complain of impairment of night vision, but color vision is usually normal. The visual fields usually demonstrate concentric constriction. Improvement of the visual fields after the acute episode may require days or months, but the field loss may show no recovery and become permanent.

Six subjects were exposed to a Ct of 15 mg min ur3 of sarin vapor (Moylan-Jones andPrice-Thomas, 1973). Visual acuity was unchanged after the exposure (it was actually improved in one subject), despite the subjects complaints to the contrary. The topical instillation of cyclopento-late markedly decreased near visual ability. The investigators suggested that topical mydriatics be reserved for those needing night vision or those with marked discomfort from the eye changes.
