Nickel azide

Nickel-azide coordination chemistry has received particular attention with respect to magnetic properties and molecular magnetism. Therefore, Nin/N3 systems are covered in a separate section (Section 6.3.4.13.1). [Pg.281]

The complex azide is highly explosive and must be handled with extreme care. The analogous potassium and caesium derivatives of zinc azide and nickel azide deflagrate strongly in a flame and some are shock-sensitive [1], The potassium salt alone out of 8 azido-complexes exploded during X-irradiation in an ESCA study [2],... [Pg.1473]

Dennis I sham (Ref 3) prepd the addn compds, Ni(N3)a(C, Hs N)4 and Ni(C Hs N)6, as grn ppts by treating Ni azide with pyridine. Both compds were unstable in air and non expl. Browne et al (Ref 6) obtd an Ammono-basic Nickel Azide by electrolyzing solns of NH4 azide in liq NH3, using Ni electrodes. [Pg.593]

Nickel-azide complexes have been reported which contain the terminal-285,295 or the 1,3-ju-bonded2S6,29Sb form. The N-coordination in Ni(N3)(NO)(PPh3)2285 is as expected, but not the N(l)—N(2) distance (b) which is unrealistically short (0.98 A), most probably as a result of a contamination of Cl- in the crystal.285 In dimeric [BPh ENij tren CN ]286 the azide is 1,3-/ bridging (see 100). [Pg.232]

We have reported the synthesis of functionalized calixarene 60. The crystal structure of the nickel azide complex of this dinuclear host indicates two nickel ions bound (one centered in each of the appended lower rim macrocycles), with three unique azide 1,1 end on bridging ligands cascaded in between (Fig. 6) (152). [Pg.34]

Upon standing, aqueous solutions of nickel azide separate as green flakes which appear to be mixtures of the normal Ni(N3)2 and the basic (HO)Ni(N3) [62]. The pure basic nickel azide has been established by X-ray studies [160], but its preparation was not described. [Pg.48]

Potassium hexaazidonickelate(II), K4[Ni(N3)e] , is a yellow-green solid which dissolves to some degree in water and is insoluble in alcohol. The salt deflagrates in a flame test but is not sensitive to mechanical shock [161]. It was obtained by mixing solutions of nickel azide and a tenfold excess potassium azide. A solution of nickel azide was first made by dissolving basic nickel carbonate in hydrazoic acid. The green solution, which was 0.2 M with respect to Ni, was then poured into the potassium azide solution (concentration, 25 g KN3 in 100 ml water). Within a week the complex salt separated as a mass of fine crystals that were washed with ice-cold water and alcohol [161]. [Pg.48]

Hexacoordination is maintained in the nickel-azide system in acetonitrile and in trimethjd phosphate, where species of general formula [Ni(N3)aD6-a] are present. The azido-complexes show lower stabilities in DMSO than in AN since reasonable competition is provided by the strong donor solvent molecules27 28 [Ni(N3)4]2- seems to have a distorted octahedral arrangement with 2 DMSO molecules coordinated at the apices of the octahedron. Thus [Ni(N3)4]2- may be considered as planar with respect to azide-coordination, as is known in [Ni(CN)4]2 . The preferred hexacoordinated arrangements in all three solvents may be favoured by the small size of the azide ions and by Tu-bonding contributions in the metal azide bonds27. [Pg.166]

Some other metallic azides, like cadmium azide, are extremely sensitive to mechanical stimuli. Nickel azide is extremely sensitive to friction it explodes by slight pressure or rubbing between metal and glass. Cobalt azide is even more sensitive than nickel azide. On the other hand, zinc azide detonates rally under strong impact [115]. [Pg.108]
