The mechanism of ATP synthesis discussed here assumes that protons extruded during electron transport are in the bulk phase surrounding the inner mitochondrial membrane (intermembrane and extramitochondrial spaces). An alternative view is that there are local proton circuits within or close to the respiratory chain and complex V, and that these protons may not be in free equilibrium with the bulk phase (Williams, 1978), although this has not been supported experimentally (for references see Nicholls and Ferguson, 1992). The chemiosmotic mechanism is both elegant and simple and explains all the known facts about ATP synthesis and its dependence on the structural integrity of the mitochondria, although the details may appear complex. This mechanism will now be discussed in more detail.

A significant number of letters were received in response to this request and were published in the Journal over the next few months (22). Basically all of the correspondents favored the idea of an institute for drug research, although they differed somewhat in their vision of how it might operate. In the meantime, the New York Section adopted a resolution to refer the matter to the Advisory Committee of the American Chemical Society, urging that the proposed institute be undertaken under the auspices of the Society. The Advisory Committee authorized President William Nichols to appoint a committee to report on the endowment that would be needed to support such an institute and to outline the policies under which it should be operated. The Committee on the Institute for Drug Research was appointed in February 1919 with Herty, to nobody s surprise, as Chairman.

He received an honorary D.Sc. degree from Williams in 1939 and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1940. Other awards included the Katherine Berkham Judd prize for Cancer Research (1941), D. Pharm Honoris Causa, Universite de Paris (1953), Manufacturing Chemists Association Award for Teaching (1959), Norris Award for Teaching (1959), and the William H. Nichols Medal (1963).
