The American consortium NeSSI [23] (New Sampling Sensor Initiative) is a CPAC-sponsored (Center for Process Analytical Chemistry) open initiative formed in 2000 to create a standard for process analysis. The object is to implement modular and smart process analytics. It also aims at the future integration of micro analytical devices and micro structured reactors. The concept is derived from the semiconductor industry and follows the ISA SP76 standard. Companies such as Parker-Hannifin, Kinetics and Swagelok are involved. A new approach has recently been introduced to standardize the sampling system. It is based on a modular concept where each active component fits into a standardized flow path. This system, called NeSSl (New Sampling/Sensor Initiative), is described in much more detail in Chapter 10.

Dr. David Veltkamp of CPAC describes in Chapter 10 the developments and present status of NeSSI (New Sampling and Sensor Initiative) and how it could enhance the use of microsystems. This initiative has progressed from primarily a standard for process sampling to a potential base for studies involving microreactors and analytical tools. 

It is envisioned that many of these technologies will ultimately be compatible with the NeSSI (New Sampling and Sensor Initiative) platform and, thus, will be added to the growing toolbox of characterization technologies that could be used in an array format for the generahon of meaningful data. In any case, the size constraints for this DARPA commissioned research far exceed those of NeSSI s (New Sampling and Sensing Initiative) modular and standardized micro-analytic elements, so that these sensors will easily fit on a NeSSl substrate for even further application possibilities. The drastic reduction in size, analysis time, cost, and energy consumption, ease of implementation and maintenance, and compliance with NeSSl standards make this technology highly marketable to the civilian sector.
