None of Dalton s attractions ever led to anything serious. His salary at New College was not generous, and he didn t feel that he was financially able to marry until he was past the middle of his long life. By that time, years of bachelorhood might have caused him to become... [Pg.137]

John Dalton, 1766—1844. English Quaker chemist. Teacher of mathematics and physics at New College, Manchester. In his New System of Chemistry he showed how his atomic theory can be used to explain the laws which govern chemical combination. He also made careful meteorological observations and described color-blindness (daltonism). See also ref. (32). [Pg.399]

DALTON, JOHN (1766-1844). Dalton was an English scientist who worked in the fields of biology, chemistry, earth science, mathematics, and physics. He became a professor of mathematics at the New College in Manchester, England. His beginning research work was on meteorology. Early in his career, he also studied color blindness. This was of special interest to him since Dalton was himself color-blind. [Pg.469]

At the Jardin du Roy, nearly all the chair holders as well as their replacements were members of the Paris Academy of Sciences, and all except Boulduc were doctors, while all the demonstrators (except for Davisson) were pharmacists. The situation of Guillaume-Franfois Rouelle as demonstrator is unique in the history of the Jardin du Roy, as he was appointed with the title demonstrator of chemistry at the Jardin des plantes under the title of professor of chemistry. The last demonstrator on the list, Antoine-Louis Brongniart had already been appointed demonstrator at the new College depharmacie founded in 1777, when he joined the Jardin du Roy two years later. [Pg.85]
