New attitudes

In the late 1940s a reaction against this idea of a dental material took place. Increasing attention was paid to problems of compatibility between the restoration and the tooth. We now believe that a restorative should be at one with the tooth material in all respects. It should possess identical properties. Its thermal characteristics should be the same as those of the tooth and its appearance should match that of the enamel. It should provide some therapeutic action. In fact, a restorative material should no longer be regarded as a filling but as an enamel or dentine substitute . [Pg.92]

This chapter is about the new refrigerants and the new attitude needed in design, maintenance and servicing of refrigeration equipment. [Pg.28]

Fundamental to the support for nuclear energy is the new attitude in the industry itself. Nuclear electricity producers are adapting well to the onset of competition in the marketplace. We are seeing consolidation, nuclear plant purchases, and the pursuit of license renewals. In this new environment, the U.S. nuclear industry is entertaining something of a renaissance and beginning to take credit for its accomplishments. [Pg.108]

This is the point where the hypothesizer clears the field for the experimenter. If the series caterpillar-pupa-moth would have to be extracted from the fossil record perhaps we could get the evidence today because we know that it happened as surely as we know that the caterpillar did not go through descent with variations to become a butterfly. Perhaps with a new attitude we may be able to find our developmental... [Pg.82]

MCS (you probably have already started to feel better after a few months), it s important to shift your focus toward learning to accept life with MCS. (Certainly in this case all other medical causes of your condition should have already been ruled out through the established medical arena.) With this new attitude you will find in time that you reach inner acceptance and peace, and thereby avoid being stuck in a downward spiral. The disadvantage of denial is that you continue to expose yourself to all sorts of substances and risk becoming sensitive to even more substances. [Pg.38]

The pharmacist who obtains patient histories, conducts physical examinations, orders laboratory tests, and prescribes medications must adopt new attitudes and develop new judgment skills. Communication is paramount, both with patients and with other health care professionals, particularly physicians. It has been said that poor communication and emotional issues are at the heart of nearly all medical malpractice actions.Interdisciplinary communication is vital to ease the passage of pharmacists into expanded prescribing roles good communication will enhance collaboration in patient care and diminish perceived threats to physicians autonomy and authority. Obviously, expanded clinical roles for pharmacists will require increased patient contact and strong communication skills. If the patient and the pharmacist fail to understand each other, the pharmacist s risk of liability is increased. [Pg.721]

Now, as Toney Freeman prepares to battle it out in the pro ranks, he s got a new attitude, a new Coach, and a massive physique. You re now dealing with a man who has the potential to reach the pinnacle of success in bodybuilding, the ONLY pro competing who has the ability to carry insane amounts of mass while maintaining an aesthetic that is second to none. [Pg.122]

Yet an age of specialization, in which a matrix of relationships is an essential norm, requires an entirely new attitude toward partnership. Each must view the other as internal, an integral component of one s own company and perceive the partner s success as tantamount to the parent company s own. The idea that companies can create dynamic products together, or not at all, is still alien. The new reality of equality, and of genuinely shared fate, is difficult for traditional competitors to fully appreciate. [Pg.101]

Unfortunately, we had no safety net to protect us, and developments in biotechnological R D suddenly broke down, partly due to the lack of material resources, and partly to the constantly spreading new attitude of solving only the most urgent daily problems. Therefore, the question may justly arise How to go on with biotechnological R D and production in Hungary The answer to the question requires due consideration and evaluation of the following issues ... [Pg.171]

Some of the advances in fundamental science that have led to new attitudes and approaches to environmental problems include the use of correlated chemical measurements to investigate environmental processes, development of industrial ecology as a framework for studying issues, use of life-cycle analysis to evaluate the impact of substances in the environment, recognition of the importance of speciation (in contrast to total concentration) of chemical substances, and recognition that a systems approach is often necessary to address complex environmental issues. [Pg.24]

The three bas-reliefs suggest both the problem in the cultural unconscious and a possible new attitude. The two on the left show that Western culture had adopted rational and heroic values, identified as masculine, to the neglect of values identified as feminine. The centrality of this theme was clear in the first plate of the Splendor Solis, but it is developed more specifically here. The bas-relief on the right, the meeting of Alexander and Diogenes, represents a shift toward inner development rather than exclusive valuation of outer mastery and conquest. It also prefigures the final plate of the series (Plate Til), where the alchemist has entered the alchemical bath. The alchemists ... [Pg.55]

A new attitude toward life, represented by the father, could help the patient leave his fantasy world (of denial) so that the river of life might flow. After the analytic session in which he talked about the dream, this man felt the need to take some action that would give him direct and immediate experience of this new part of himself. He went on a long hike and found a small stream, following it to a blockage. He dug out sand and rocks until the water flowed freely, and this activity made him feel alive and powerful. This helped him fix in his mind and body the living symbolism of his dream. [Pg.82]

The plant symbolism suggests healing or transformation at a very basic, cellular level, nurtured by the light of the inner sun. It also calls to mind the Vegetative level of the nervous system, where our psychosomatic responses arise unconsciously. The absence of humans and other animals suggests that instinctual and intellectual activities have not fully revitalized in terms of action and will. The new growth even seems to be a different kind of plant, further suggesting life on a new basis. With this new attitude, illumination comes not only from outside and above but from the darkness within (lumen naturae). [Pg.153]

Another potentially important development in the free-radical polymerization area is the nitrile barrier resins. These products generally are graft polymers containing a glassy phase comprised of 80% acrylonitrile and 20% styrene or other vinyl monomer grafted onto a rubber substrate. The commercialization of these materials has been interrupted by an adverse ruling by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in connection with extraction of traces of acrylonitrile in food-related applications. The amounts involved are very small. A new attitude under development in the FDA may lead to the eventual clearance of these materials. [Pg.155]

These and a host of other studies since the early 1990s, research to be discussed in this book, all point to a new attitude in biological and medical science—a new understanding that the prenatal environment is an extremely important determinant of health, disease, IQ and behavior. [Pg.16]

The FDA s reputation for fairness and impartiality was dented in 1989 by scandal, corruption, and fraud. The pharmaceutical industry, particularly that part concerned with the manufacture of generic products, was also tainted. The FDA s backlash has been to move away from systems of trust toward strict enforcement of compliance. The linchpin of the FDA s new attitude has been preapproval inspection, incorporated into formal enforcement programs on October 1, 1990. [Pg.273]

The story of the CFCs shows that we can respond relatively quickly to a serious environmental problem if we decide to do so. Also, it is important to understand that chemical manufacturers have a new attitude about the environment—they are now among the leaders in finding ways to address our environmental problems. [Pg.6]

This dramatic change in the environment makes it imperative for Europe, as well as the United States, to adopt a radically new attitude — in a word, to Innovate, technological Innovation... [Pg.53]
