New attitudes

In the late 1940s a reaction against this idea of a dental material took place. Increasing attention was paid to problems of compatibility between the restoration and the tooth. We now believe that a restorative should be at one with the tooth material in all respects. It should possess identical properties. Its thermal characteristics should be the same as those of the tooth and its appearance should match that of the enamel. It should provide some therapeutic action. In fact, a restorative material should no longer be regarded as a filling but as an enamel or dentine substitute .

A new attitude toward life, represented by the father, could help the patient leave his fantasy world (of denial) so that the river of life might flow. After the analytic session in which he talked about the dream, this man felt the need to take some action that would give him direct and immediate experience of this new part of himself. The absence of humans and other animals suggests that instinctual and intellectual activities have not fully revitalized in terms of action and will. The new growth even seems to be a different kind of plant,further suggesting life on a new basis. With this new attitude, illumination comes not only from outside and above but from the darkness within (lumen naturae). 

Another potentially important development in the free-radical polymerization area is the nitrile barrier resins. These products generally are graft polymers containing a glassy phase comprised of 80% acrylonitrile and 20% styrene or other vinyl monomer grafted onto a rubber substrate. The commercialization of these materials has been interrupted by an adverse ruling by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in connection with extraction of traces of acrylonitrile in food-related applications. The amounts involved are very small. A new attitude under development in the FDA may lead to the eventual clearance of these materials. 

These and a host of other studies since the early 1990s, research to be discussed in this book, all point to a new attitude in biological and medical science—a new understanding that the prenatal environment is an extremely important determinant of health, disease, IQ and behavior. 

The FDA s reputation for fairness and impartiality was dented in 1989 by scandal, corruption, and fraud. The pharmaceutical industry, particularly that part concerned with the manufacture of generic products, was also tainted. The FDA s backlash has been to move away from systems of trust toward strict enforcement of compliance. The linchpin of the FDA s new attitude has been preapproval inspection, incorporated into formal enforcement programs on October 1, 1990. 

The story of the CFCs shows that we can respond relatively quickly to a serious environmental problem if we decide to do so. Also, it is important to understand that chemical manufacturers have a new attitude about the environment—they are now among the leaders in finding ways to address our environmental problems. 

This dramatic change in the environment makes it imperative for Europe, as well as the United States, to adopt a radically new attitude — in a word, to Innovate, technological Innovation...
