In contrast to the slow temporal patterns, oscillations (both in individual neurons and as observed in field potentials) are disrupted by picrotoxin application (MacLeod and Laurent, 1996 MacLeod et al., 1998). Thus, there seems to be at least two independent channels of inhibitory input to the PNs. 

The effects of a muscarinic stimulus on the dopaminergic system depend on both the mAChRs involved as well as the brain regions involved. In the striatum, activation of mAChRs can result in both an increase in dopamine release (Raiteri et al., 1984 De Klippel et al., 1993) as well as a decrease in dopamine release (De Klippel et al., 1993). At the same time, the functional effect of the application of muscarinic agonists on dopaminergic neurons is influenced by the temporal pattern of activation (Fiorillo and Williams, 2000).

The temporal pattern of response to a tone burst is summarized in a peristimulus time histogram (PSTH). Auditory neurons may discharge only a few times during a brief tone burst, but if a histogram of spike events is synchronized to the onset of repeated tone bursts, a PSTH results that is more statistically representative of the neuron s response. Discharge patterns from the nerve have a primary-like pattern (see Figure 5.5). 

Brain SPECT of AD patients typically shows bilateral posterior temporal and parietal hypoperfusion.
