The spatio-temporal variations of the concentration field in turbulent mixing processes are associated wdth very different conditions for chemical reactions in different parts of a reactor. This scenario usually has a detrimental effect on the selectivity of reactions when the reaction time-scale is small compared with the mixing time-scale. Under the same conditions (slow mixing), the process times are increased considerably. Due to mass transfer inhibitions, the true kinetics of a reaction does not show up instead, the mixing determines the time-scale of a process. This effect is known as mixing masking of reactions [126]. [Pg.47]

For simple outer-sphere electron transfer reactions, the effective frequency co is determined by the properties of the slow polarization of the medium. For a liquid like water, where the temporal relaxation of the slow polarization as a response to the external field is single exponential, tfie effective frequency is equal to... [Pg.658]

Temporal response to changes in abundance of MeHg A slow rate of response to altered MeHg loading could increase the potential for interference by confounding factors, whereas a rapid response, coupled with high intraannual variability would hinder identification of multiyear trends Hours to days Hours to days... [Pg.103]

This belief was further supported by the evidence of a correlation between the clinical response and REM sleep suppression as well as a temporal relationship between the onset of clinical response and REM sleep suppression. However, some of the later studies suggested that REM sleep suppression is not necessary for the antidepressant action (Gillin 1983). For example, some studies show evidence of no change or even an increase in REM sleep with the treatment of depression (Gillin et al. 2001). Recently, Landolt Gillin (Landolt and Gillin 2002) have also demonstrated that the antidepressant response to phenelzine treatment does not depend on elimination of REM sleep or inhibition of slow wave activity in non-REM sleep. However, the generalization of some of these studies is limited because of their small sample size. [Pg.437]

FIGURE 10-7 The delay between Ca2+ influx into the nerve terminal and the postsynaptic response is brief. The temporal relationships between the Ca2+ current and the action potential in the nerve terminal and the postsynaptic response in the squid giant synapse are shown. The rapid depolarization (a) and repolarization (b) phases of the action potential are drawn. A major fraction of the synaptic delay results from the slow-opening, voltage-sensitive Ca2+ channels. There is a further delay of approximately 200 is between Ca2+ influx and the postsynaptic response. (With permission from reference [20].)... [Pg.175]

To summarize, current state of NIR research consists of two major groups of instrumentation (f) continuous wave and (2) time-resolved and frequency domain and two major groups of parameters assessed (f) slow responding hemodynamic (HbO and Hb) parameters and (2) fast response neuronal parameter. Assessing the fast response parameter requires high temporal resolution provided by NIR equipment. Such temporal resolutions are currently not possible using fMRI modality. Thus, a natural complementary relationship exists between fMRI and NIR methods, where fMRI can provide better spatial localization and NIR better temporal resolution. [Pg.363]

In order to implement frequency domain based sensing systems capable of monitoring the temporal luminescence of sensors, in few seconds, data must be collected at multiple frequencies simultaneously. Single-frequency techniques have been used to make frequency domain measurements of luminescent decays. 14, 23 28) This approach is unsuitable for real-time applications since data must be acquired at several frequencies in order to precisely and accurately determine the temporal variables of luminescent systems. 1 Each frequency requires a separate measurement, which makes the single frequency approach too slow to monitor the evolution... [Pg.276]
