Neurological system seizures

Symptoms of toxicity are related to the cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and neurological systems. These include bradycardia, ventricular tachycardia, nausea, and vomiting. Paresthesias of the extremities and generalized weakness have been reported. Rarely, seizures may occur in humans. This symptom is more commonly seen in animal models. 

It is important to note those neurological systems that are apparently spared They Include the visual system autonomic and vegetative functions including those of hypothalamus personality and memory functions associated with the temporo-limblc system (except in a few severely deficient individuals) and cerebellar function. Seizures are not a feature. 

One of the most sensitive systems affected by lead exposure is the nervous system. Encephalopathy is characterized by symptoms such as coma, seizures, ataxia, apathy, bizarre behavior, and incoordination (CDC 1985). Children are more sensitive to neurological changes. In children, encephalopathy has been associated with PbB levels as low as 70 pg/dL (CDC 1985). The most sensitive peripheral index of neurotoxicity of lead is reported to be slowed conduction in small motor libers of the ulnar nerve in workers with 30-40 pg/dL lead in blood (Landrigan 1989). Other potential biomarkers of lead suggested for neurotoxicity in workers are neurological and behavioral tests, as well as cognitive and visual sensory function tests (Williamson and Teo 1986). Neurologic effects Convulsive seizures and peripheral neuropathy, the latter characterized mainly by numbness or paresthesia of an extremity, have been reported in patients treated with nitroimidazole drugs including tinidazole and metronidazole. The appearance of abnormal neurologic signs demands the prompt discontinuation of tinidazole therapy. Administer tinidazole with caution to patients with central nervous system diseases.

Central and/or peripheral nervous system involvement is one of the most frequent features, often resulting in the neonatal period in drowsiness, poor sucking, severe hypotonia, abnormal movements, seizures, respiratory distress, and fatal keto-acidotic coma with lactic acidosis [3]. To these severe conditions echo late-onset diseases now frequently attributed to or associated with mitochondrial OXPHOS defects, such as Alzheimer s or Parkinsons disease [10]. Major neurological symptoms, in variable combinations, involve trunk hypotonia, cranial nerve and brainstem involvement (with abnormal eye movements, ophthalmoplegia, recurrent apneas), cerebellar ataxia, myoclonia, seizures, pyramidal syndrome, peripheral neuropathy, poliodystrophy, and leukodystrophy infections [27,28]. A diffuse impairment of the cerebral white matter (leukodystrophy) mostly results in motor disturbance with mental retardation and low incidence of seizures.
