The computer effort required for convergence depends on the number and complexity of the recycles ia the dowsheet, the nonlinearities ia the physical properties, and the nonlinearities ia the calculation of phase or chemical equiHbria. In sequential-modular simulators these calculations are converged one at a time, sequentially, and ia a nested manner. In equation-oriented simulators they are converged as a group and, ia the case of complex dow sheets involving nonideal mixtures, there could be significant reduction ia computer effort. [Pg.74]

Hierarchical Structure. In order to be better able to simulate the hierarchical nature of many real-world complex systems, in which agent behavior can itself be best described as being the result of the collective behavior of some swarm of constituent agents. Swarm is designed so that agents themselves can be swarms of other agents. Moreover, Swarm is designed around a time hierarchy, Thus, Swarm is both a nested hierarchy of swarms and a nested hierarchy of schedules. [Pg.569]

Minimize overall number of steps and stages preferably using nested MCRs as far as possible as the main strategy in a synthetic plan to a complex target. Overall convergence is maximized dramatically if a plan contains a late-stage MCR that involves components that are themselves terminal products of independent parallel linear sequences. [Pg.119]

These models are nested the search starts with the simplest model and proceeds to the models of increasing degree of complexity (number of fitting parameters). An Ockham s razor principle is assumed here if more than one model is consistent with the data, the simplest model is preferred. For each model of motion, all parameters are determined from fitting, based on the simplex algorithm, to minimize the following target function ... [Pg.298]

Many of these wild places and conditions are quite unintended outcomes of our own actions. Urban people are constantly making incidental natures, interacting with nonhuman species to create environmental outcomes of startling complexity. The lesser kestrel, a bird of prey currently on the brink of extinction, thrives in some cities of the Middle East, where it nests in clay roof tiles in areas of urban growth, just as the recovery of the peregrine falcon, a threatened species in the United states, is partly predicated on its New York City... [Pg.12]
