Parallelism linearity

Minimize overall number of steps and stages preferably using nested MCRs as far as possible as the main strategy in a synthetic plan to a complex target. Overall convergence is maximized dramatically if a plan contains a late-stage MCR that involves components that are themselves terminal products of independent parallel linear sequences. 

Under normal conditions an atom in elemental tellurium has coordination number 2 + 4. It has been known for a long time that pressure causes the interatomic distances to approximate each other until finally every tellurium atom has six equidistant neighboring atoms at 297 pm the structure (now called Te-IV) corresponds to /3-polonium. However, before this is attained, two other modifications (Te-II and Te-III) that are out of the ordinary appear at 4 GPa and 7 GPa. Te-II contains parallel, linear chains that are mutually shifted in such a way that each Te atom has, in addition to its two neighboring atoms within the chain... 

We have shown19 that there are separate but nearly parallel linear relationships between the methyl deviations, 6(CH3—Z), of methyl substituted species CH3—Z and the electronegativity of the atom in Z bonded to carbon for functionality in the second row of the periodic table (Z = —OH, —NH2, —CH3, —B<) and in the third row of the periodic table (Z = —Cl, —SH, —Al<). If the methyl deviations for CII3B1 and (CH3)4Ge, both containing fourth-row atoms, are now calculated and the results plotted versus the Pauling electronegativity, the two new points fall on the line established by the third-row series (Figure 1).

The technical details of parallel linear algebra have been widely discussed in the research literature and are not repeated here. The interested reader is directed to the particularly accessible introduction and selected bibliography by Demmel et al., which has more than 200 references. Instead of concentrating on technical details, we layout, in general terms, the major issues important to developers of parallel computational chemistry applications. 

Ladder polymers. A ladder polymer consists of two parallel linear strands of molecules with a regular sequence of cross-links. Ladder polymers have only condensed cyclic units in the chain. The molecular structure of ladder polymers is more rigid than that of conventional liner polymers. Typical examples of ladder polymers are shown in Fig. 14.12.
