Nerve growth factor physiology

The cyanthin diterpenes show physiological activity ranging from cytotoxicity to nerve-growth factor stimulation. Andrew J. Phillips of the University of Colorado recently described (J. Am. Client. Soc. 2005,127,5334) a concise cnantioselective synthesis of cyanthiwigin U 3, based on the metathesis conversion of 1 to 2, using the second generation Grubbs catalyst.

We have been studying the E.coli expression of human neurotrophin-3 (NT-3), a member of the nerve growth factor (NGF) family of neurotrophic factors. Cohen, Stanley Harold (b. 1922) American biochemist who worked on DNA-cutting enzymes. He helped to isolate nerve growth factor, went on to isolate epidermal growth factor and to show how this substance interacted with cells to produce a range of effects. Cohen shared the 1986 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine with Rita Levi-Montalcini.
