Neglect, personal

Within your quality system you should produce and maintain a list of special processes that have been qualified and a list of the personnel who are qualified to operate them. In this way you can easily identify an unqualified process or an unauthorized person, or an obsolete list if you have neglected to maintain it. [Pg.362]

One area of research related to abuse or neglect has to do with how well a person fits within his or her social environment. One researcher, Marsha Linehan (1993), has talked about how a poor fit with the social environment (viz., not fitting into the family, school life, or other important social networks) may cause psychiatric problems if the poorness of fit causes the person to feel like an outsider or to feel constandy invalidated or put down. Many of my clients have told me that they have not felt part of their families or that they did not fit well into society in general, or have described themselves as black sheep. Abuse and neglect lead to an invalidating environment, but so can mismatches of personalities within families or mismatches of behavioral patterns with social norms. Furthermore, there is evidence that the way emotion is expressed in families can be associated with a poorness of fit that can influence the course of drug problems. [Pg.23]

There are many instances when a family member (collateral) will seek help for a problem before the person with the drug problem does. Often, however, the family member will not be forthcoming about the drug problem, or it will not be otherwise obvious that drug abuse is indirectly involved. Excellent examples of these types of situations include the family members seeking help as victims of domestic violence or parental neglect, or are injured in accidents. [Pg.58]

In 1979, only 120 million square meters of new residential construction was undertaken. Given a population of 1 billion, that works out to be an insignificant increase of 0.12 m2/person. Massive building programs projected for the next decade will attempt to correct past neglects in the housing sector. [Pg.339]

The primary issue here is whether a fetus is a legal person such that damaging it through drug addiction is child neglect. [Pg.67]

The Florida Supreme Court began by reviewing case law and concluding that a fetus is a person for purposes of the child neglect statute. (For example, it looked at situations where a fetus had been hurt or killed in an assault.)... [Pg.67]

I have referred to several ethical questions in Chapter 6 and this appendix, and I close with a more personal one. Were it not that someone in the Legislature might revive the ancient cry of the ultra-Protestant, Would you have celibacy practiced in the open streets a case could be made for academic celibacy. As C. S. Lewis remarks somewhere, academics do not work hard, they just work all the time, and this can put an enormous burden on a spouse, particularly if he or she is not an academic. No doubt there are some who, like Euler, can write their papers in the midst of the domestic hubbub, but most of us get increasingly irritable and obsessed as a deadline approaches or a book is nearly finished (or abandoned). I must admit that I have, at times, been oblivious to the distress I have caused my wife, whose loyalty and support have ever been beyond my desserts. It is one of the blessings of retirement that, busier than ever although one may be, there are not the pressures that one feels in the thick of a career and no excuses for neglecting a relationship without which the career itself would be little worth. [Pg.453]
