Necrotizing arteritis

The cytotoxicity of LDL can also be inferred from the study by Blake et al. (1985). In this study of human cultured endothelial cells, stored sera from patients with necrotizing arteritis demonstrated an enhanced tendency to develop oxidized LDL, which correlated closely with endothelial cell cytotoxicity. This process appears to require the presence of both oxygen and transition metal ions such as iron in the presence of a reducing agent (Gebicki ef /., 1991). There is considerable evidence that transition metals are involved in cell-induced modifications of LDL including the inhibitory effects of EDTA and desfer-rioxamine (Hiramatsu et 1987). A role for Of in LDL modification by endothelial cells and fibroblasts comes from studies showing inhibition of LDL oxidation by SOD (Steinbrecher, 1988). [Pg.188]

Besides the paranoid psychosis associated with chronic use of amphetamines, a specific lesion associated with chronic amphetamine use is necrotizing arteritis, which may involve many small and medium-sized arteries and lead to fatal brain hemorrhage or renal failure. Overdoses of amphetamines are rarely fatal they can usually be managed by sedating the patient with benzodiazepines. [Pg.731]

These compounds were extensively used in the 40 s through the 60 s to treat pulmonary and other systemic infections. Reports of acute renal failure, most secondary to crystalluria were common [1-3]. Rarely, the sulfonamides can cause acute interstitial nephritis, necrotizing arteritis or hemoglobinuric acute renal failure due to massive acute hemolytic anemia [4, 6]. [Pg.223]

Uterine devascularization is another proposed mechanism. Devascularization has been reported in one case [98] to cause endometrial atrophy resulting in persistent amenorrhea. Endometritis secondary to a perivascular necrotizing arteritis has been seen following UAE with gold-colored gelatin microspheres, however, as an eosinophilic component was... [Pg.133]

Necrotizing vasculitis with few or no immune deposits affecting small vessels, i.e., capillaries, venules, or arterioles. Necrotizing arteritis involving small and medium-sized arteries may be present. Necrotizing glomerulonephritis is very common. Pulmonary capillaritis often occurs. [Pg.592]
