In the United States, organizations such as the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and the National Association of State Fire Marshals have been instrumental in promoting fire safety of plastics in these applications. In many cases, it is not required by law that flame-retardant polymers be used. Rather, the UL seal is necessary for acceptance by consumers that the products meet the necessary requirements of fire safety. 

There are also a number of technical and trade organizations in this country which have prepared and issued specifications dealing with specialized aspects of the plastics field. The Laminated Products Section of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association has official specifications for laminated sheets, rods, and tubes 20) and for decorative laminated materials 19). The Aeronautical Material Specifications Group of the Society of Automotive Engineers has written specifications for plastic materials to be used in aircraft construction 22). American nationai standards institute n. (ANSI) address 1430 Broadway, New York, NY 10018. Clearinghouse and national coordinator for voluntary standards of engineering, equipment, industrial processing, and safety. Formerly known as American Standards Association (ASA). In the plastics field, ANSI works closely with the society of the plastics industry (SPI) and the society of automotive engineers (SAE) to develop and publish standards for plastics materials, processing equipment, operations, and operating safety.

Standard test methods for plastics are provided by many different agencies including, American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM), the US Government (Military and Federal Specifications), National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), etc. 

Roy is a member of the American Chemical Society, tile American Institute of Chemists, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and Sigmi Xi and has been awarded honorary doctoral degrees by Ohio State University, Washington College and Memchester College. He is the recipient of the John Scott Medal (1951), the National Association of Manufacturers Modern Pioneer Medal (1965), and the Chemist Pioneer award of the American Institute of Chemists (1964). He was inducted into the Plastics Hall of Fame (1973), named a Pioneer in Polymer Science in Polymer News (1985) and inducted into the Inventors Hall of Fame (1986). 

The primary consensus-based organizations in the United States developing and maintaining fire and flammability test standards are ASTM International (previously the American Society for Testing and Materials) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Committee EOS on Fire Tests is the primary committee in ASTM that develops fire and flammability test standards (25). Several material- or product-oriented Committees have subcommittees that develop fire and flammability test standards as well. For example. Committee D20 on Plastics has a subcommittee on thermal properties (D20.30) that develops and maintains some fire and flammability test standards for plastics. The Fire Test Committee is responsible for all fire and flammability test standards that are used by any of the fire safety codes and standards published by NFPA. A number of test laboratories in the United States, such as Underwriters Laboratories and FM Global, have established a consensus process that meets the requirements of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) so that they now can publish American National Standards.
