Harrison Narcotics Act Probably the most important legislation regarding opium. The act defined opium as a narcotic and was designed to control its sale. [Pg.98]

States and around the world to fight narcotics trafficking and to deal with drug addiction. The metaphor has been criticized as simplistic, since it implies a definable enemy and the possibility of a definitive victory. [Pg.113]

In 2000, the UCR estimated 1.6 million arrests for drug violations in the United States among all age groups. The UCR defines drug violations as state and/or local offenses related to the unlawful sale, purchase, distribution, manufacture, cultivation, possession, or use of a narcotic drug. These reports consider marijuana a narcotic drug. [Pg.90]

Commission on Narcotic Drugs requested the Board to provide a definition of safrole-rich oils for the purpose of controlling such substances in the same manner as safrole. In response to that request, the Board has defined safrole-rich oils as being any mixtures or natural products containing safrole present in such a way that it can be used or recovered by readily applicable means . [Pg.2]

In classical structure-activity studies, most of the attempts concentrated on correlating the activity with one of the molecular properties— e.g., the carcinogenic activity of polynuclear aromatic compounds with their electronic structure (18, 19), the narcotic activity with lipophilicity 20, 21), the insecticidal activity of cyclodienes with their three-dimensional molecular silhouette 22), etc. Sometimes the activity correlated well with only one of the molecuar parameters. In our approach these are special cases where other physicochemical properties do not play critical roles in determining the variation in the activity within a set of congeners so that the coefficients defining these other properties are zero. [Pg.10]

The second pha.se of the studies" dealt with the attempted synthesis of substances with central narcotic and, especially, analge.sic action. The morphine molecule contains certain well-defined types of chemical. structures. Among these are the phenanthrene nucleus, the diben/ofuran nucleus, and. as a variant of the latter, carbazolc. Thc.se. synthetic. studies, although extensive and interesting, provided no significant lindings and are not discussed further in this text. [Pg.733]

The Law dated 26 July 1969 regulating poisonous substances was brought in application of the United Nations Unique Convention of 1961. The Order dated 7 January 1986 concerned the establishment of the National Bureau of Narcotic Drugs whose function is to recommend measures to fight drug addictions. An Order dated 6 November 1996 defined the functions of this Bureau. [Pg.731]

No samples of medicinal products containing psychotropic or narcotic substances, as defined in international agreements, medicines that may cause dependency or give rise to public health problems from improper use, or any other medicinal products as determined by the relevant authorities may be given. [Pg.116]

A number of reports in the mid to late 1980 s described patients who developed rhabdomyolysis while using cocaine [118-120]. Some of these patients experienced acute renal failure [121-125]. While the exact incidence of acute renal failure secondary to cocaine rhabdomyolysis is unknown, in one reported series it occurred in only three of 211 admissions for cocaine related complications [114]. On the other hand, in another series of nearly 40 patients the incidence of cocaine related acute rhabdomyolysis increased over the period of enrollment from 2 patients in 1985 to 22 patients in 1987 [126]. Several reports of patients with cocaine-induced rhabdomyolysis have clearly defined both the clinical syndrome and the risk factors for the development of acute renal failure and an adverse outcome [123, 126, 127]. Most patients have been previously healthy young males (mean age 30-35 years old and 80-85% male). The cocaine has been smoked, used intravenously, snorted, or taken orally implying that route of administration was not relevant [122,123,126, 127]. In contrast to narcotic related rhabdomyolysis, a history of prolonged coma or stupor is absent. On presentation, the majority of patients are combative and... [Pg.393]

Caution May be narcotic in high concns. Chronic toxicity not well defined, but is less toxic than benzene. [Pg.1590]

Because of some ill-defined instability of persoirality, no better than a borderline adjustment was made. The individuals of this group are not fundamentally antisocial and, with some artificial assistance, an acceptable adjustment can be made. After their first few experiences with narcotics. [Pg.27]
