Names of acids

Peroxo- Group. When used in conjunction with the trivial names of acids, the prefix peroxo- indicates substitution of —O— by —O—O—. 

Amides. Names for amides are derived from the names of the acid radicals (or from the names of acids by replacing acid by amide) for example, S02(NH2)2, sulfonyl diamide (or sulfuric diamide) NH2SO3H, sulfamidic acid (or amidosulfuric acid).

In his Elective Attractions, Torbern Bergman stated emphatically that the so-called sedative salt is not a salt but an acid. The substance commonly called sedative salt, said he, is more nearly allied to acids than any other class of bodies. It reddens turnsole and saturates alkalis and soluble earths. It also dissolves various metals, and has other properties which shew its acid nature, and it seems better entitled to the name of acid of borax than to that of sedative salt (66).

That hydrogen is present in an acid is implied in the name by the word acid, not by the word hydrogen . For example, HCl is hydrochloric acid. The word hydrogen is used in names of acid salts, such as sodium hydrogen carbonate, NaHCOs.

Names of Acids.—The common names of the normal acids are derived from words having some relation to their occurrence or properties, e.g.y but3Tic, from butter, valeric from Valeriana etc. The ofl cial names are derived by adding the termination oic to the root of the name for the hydrocarbon of the same number of carbon atoms. This will be understood by examining the names given in the table and comparing with the formulas. 

The names of acid derivatives are taken in simple ways from either the common name or the lUPAC name of the corresponding carboxylic acid. For example ... 

German names of acids should generally be translated by substituting -ic acid for -stiure. Some well-established names are exceptions, as Zuckersaure (saccharic acid), Milchsaure (lactic acid), or Valeriansaure (valeric acid), etc. For a few well-established names it is correct to translate -insaure -ic acid instead of -inic acid. E.g., Acridinsaure is acridic acid. Names ending in carbonsaure are to be translated -carboxylic acid (not carbonic acid).
