The 6-hydroxy-5-n-undecyl derivative of 210 (UHDBT) is a structural analog of ubiquinone. It inhibits the oxidation of succinate and NADH (78MI2 85MI3), blocks the respiratory chain in membranes from Pseudomonas cichorii or Pseudomonas aptata (85MI4), and increases the activity of cytochrome c, about 2-fold (86MI5). It also inhibits the conversion of p-hydroxybenzoic acid (77BBR1536). 

The solubilization of eumelanins has been attempted under a variety of conditions. Table IV summarizes the results obtained with some native melanins (300). A melanin is considered completely solubilized if the solution does not scatter light. So far only two approaches have been successful, one of which is based on treating the pigment with Solulene 100 (0.1 M solution of dimethyl- -dodecyl-n-undecyl ammonium hydroxide in toluene incubation for 2.5 hr at 75 C). Such solutions were used in the characterization and quantitative determination of melanins (124,301). The extinction coefficient (absorption at 400 nm) for hair melanin was of the order of 3000 Af" cm per indole unit, while that of melanoma melanin was only about 70% that of synthetic dopa melanin (124). The mechanism of the Solulene solubilization process is unknown, and degradation of the pigment cannot be excluded. Interestingly, full neutralization of the melanin solution in Solulene with acetic acid did not precipitate the pigment (302).

To understand the role of pluronics as membrane permea-bilizers, the transport of various small molecules across PC lipid bilayers in the presence of pluronics was examined. To measure the transport of weak acids across planar bilayer membranes (spread over a perforated polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) sheet), the corresponding shifts in pH were observed. The addition of pluronic was shown to drastically increase the rate of the weak acid 2-n-undecyl malonic acid transport across the bilayer (Figure 3). This effect increased with increasing concentration of pluronic. This effect was present, though slower, when the pluronic was added to the opposite side of the bilayer from the acid. There were also similar, but far less pronounced, effects on the transport of acetic acid and ammonium. The authors observed that a voltage jump aaoss the membrane in the presence of tetraphenyl borate (TPB ) ion introduced an exponentially decaying current as the ions moved aaoss the membrane. Hyperbranched poly(acrylic acid) films have been grown on SAMs of alkanoic acid [137]. These films, rich in carboxylic acid groups could be utilized to selectively bind metal ions or serve as sites for further derivatization. Wurm et al. have studied electrochemically induced epitaxial polymerization [135] of iV-alkylpyrrole in solution onto a SAM composed of ((A -pyrrolyl)-n-undecyl)disulfide. These optically smooth films of long chain poly(iV-alkylpyrrole) have excellent stability in air. The Collard group [142] has studied the kinetics of electro-oxidatively polymerized polyaniline and polypyrrole on surfaces modified with SAMs formation of conducting films is initially blocked by the monolayer but nucleation at SAM defect sites leads to eventual deposition of rough polymer films.
