If about 10 ml. of ethanol are added to the mixture, the time required for complete hydrolysis is reduced to about 20 minutes, and any volatilised ester which tends to collect in the condenser is redissolved and returned to the flask. When hydrolysing an unknow n ester (p. 353) for identification purposes, however, it is often best to omit the ethanol to avoid confusion.
