Therefore, the amount of water present determines the concentration of N02 and hence the extent of nitration. The degree of cellulose nitration is designated by the nitrogen content. The maximum commercial DS is 2.9, which corresponds to 13.8% N. Products over 14% N have been obtained by special processes (51—54).

Mineral-basal media may be sterilized by autoclaving, but for almost all organic compounds that are used as sources of C, N, S, or P, it is probably better to prepare concentrated stock solutions and sterilize these by filtration, generally using 0.2 pm cellulose nitrate or cellulose acetate filters. The same applies to solutions of vitamins, and to solutions of bicarbonate and sulfide that are components of many media used for anaerobic bacteria. 

Uses Preparation of butyl esters (e.g., butyl acetate, di-n-butyl phthalate), glycol ethers solvent for waxes, resins, gums, and varnishes hydraulic fluid ingredient in perfumes and flavors additive in deicing fluids polishes, floor cleaners, stain removers, and in some gasolines (antiicing) diluent for brake fluids humectant for cellulose nitrate. 

Diaspon Gelatin. It was patented in England 8c France in 1881 by J. Anders and contained NG 92-95, wood cellulose (nitrated to 11-12%N) 4.5-7 8c alcohol 0.5-2%. These ingredients were heated together with 10-15% of solvent (3/ I-ether/alcohol) to 40-45° and... 

Moreover, Will and Lenze established that starch can be nitrated in a manner resembling cellulose nitration, by means of a mixture of nitric and sulphuric acid, to obtain a product containing 13.9% N. The same method was tried by Sapozh-nikov [15). However, he did not wholly confirm the results published by Will and Lenze, since the maximum nitrogen content in his product was 13.5%. 

Some older foreign proplnts resembled, in their compns, Celluloid(see under Camphor). Use of Celluloid as bottom closing screw disc for time fuzes is described in Ref 3 and a smoke -producing device in Ref 7.
