Myths human error

In contrast to a cause, a countermeasure can be defined by anofiier —more objective - criterion its effectiveness in crash prevention or its cost/benefit. This implies that while a cause can be identified as a human frctor the solution might be sought elsewhere. In fact, we see this all the time whenever a road is upgraded to a multi-lane divided highway the number of crashes -especially head-on crashes - diminishes greatly even though most of the crashes eliminated were caused by human errors . In the same context of driver errors that cause crashes, Anderson (1976) noted the nut behind the wheel myth does not account for the literally hundreds of documented studies which clearly indicate the value of environmental improvements in reducing accidents (pp. 20-21). Finally, a specific behavior - such as... [Pg.723]

The second myth is that all (or most) human errors likely to create accidents are as a result of the actions of accident prone people. [Pg.2]

The main message of this monograph is that the appearance of the mammalian brain with the ability to acquire drives ensured the development of social life and ultimately led to the evolution of human society. This most sophisticated form of organized life on earth is still in the trial-and-error phase of its development. It seeks to outgrow the myths-directed era of its history and arrive at its final state, the rationally directed human society. [Pg.141]

I think that the human cortex created human society and is responsible for its maintenance and continuous progress. The history of science shows that natural laws are simple and gray, but the phenomena brought into existence by them, however, are immensely complex and colorful. It has been the aim of my life to find a reasonable physiological explanation for the coexistence of order and chaos in human communities. In this study, I summarize the most important findings of my research in support of the ultimate conclusion that the unique ability of the human cortex to acquire drives created human society, a society which is still in the myths-directed trial and error phase of its development and aims to find its reason-directed final equilibrium state. [Pg.182]
