Silk, oiled A thin, very soft, and pliable protective dressing made of fine silk, coated with a flexible linseed-oil varnish. Oiled Silk is available in semitransparent or opaque form, made by the addition of talc or starch in the final coating. Oiled Muslin or Oiled Cambric is similar to oiled silk, except that the basic fabric is of glazed cotton it is thicker and heavier and consequently less pliable than oiled silk (see Dressings, protective)P ...

Compound Keein Cehtte. Melt together 12 troy ounces each of resin, suet, and yellow wax 6 troy ounces turpentine, and 7 troy ounces flox aoed oil. Strain through muslin, and stir constantly till cool. (B. 8. Cantharides Ointment. Infuse for 12 hours 1 ounce avoirdupois of canthar ides in 6 imperial fluid ounces olive oil in a covered vessel. Place the vessel in bolting water for li> minutes, press through muslin, and add 1 ounce melted yellow wax, stirring constantly till cooL ( r. i%,)... 

As with most equipment, the best measure you can take to prevent your machine from malfunctioning is to keep it clean. Cover your machine when not in use. Dust, lint, and pet hair are enemies of a smooth-running sewing machine. Use compressed air to blast away dust particles, especially dust and lint from fabric as you sew (never blow because the moisture from breath can gum up the machine). Have a store of pipe cleaners, muslin squares, and sewing machine oil. Use the pipe cleaners for swabbing out crevices. Slide squares of clean muslin between tension discs (be sure to raise the presser foot). For more specific problems, try the following tips before spending money at the repair shop. 

Before testing, the oil should be filtered through muslin cloth or a 100-inesh wire-strainer to remove solid particles that may otherwise clog the jet. Moisture also clogs the jet and if j)resent, the sample should be filtered through lintless filter paper.
