Filipovic has worked hard to break down barriers for women in the fields of engineering and business. In 1974, she became the first female professional engineer employed by a major chemical producing company. The National Museum of Science and Technology in Ottawa, Ontario, has featured her work as part of an exhibit on women inventors.

The Exploratorium, a museum of science, art, and human perception in San Francisco, has a fantastic Web site full of virtual exhibits, articles, and animations, including much of interest to chemists and chemists-to-be. 

The site of the Dalton plaque had a rich history. Dalton s laboratory was in the premises of the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society, a learned society founded in 1781. He was a member of the Society from 1794 until his death in 1844, serving as President for 28 years. The building at 36 George Street was built by the Society in 1799 and was its headquarters until a bombing raid destroyed it in 1940. Many of Dalton s papers were destroyed along with the building. Some of his possessions survive at the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry.

Ever since chemists have recognized that molecules are made up of atoms, there have been efforts to represent molecular structures accurately. One of the first attempts to develop molecular models can be traced to the early l8(X)s when John Dalton used wooden spheres drilled with holes to accept metal rod linkers as representations of atoms and ehemical bonds, respectively. The original mechanical models arc on display at the London Museum of Science. ...

By examining both Joule s published work and his apparatus, part of which survives in the Joule Collection of the Greater Manchester Museum of Science and Industry, the considerable experimental skill involved in determining the equivalent values becomes clear. We are also able to chart the changing style of his scientific work, and can begin to relate his method of work to his developing theories about natural phenomena.

There are many science and technology museums around the country—the Exploratorium in San Francisco, the Tech Museum of San Jose, the Boston Museum of Science, the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, and many more. Their purpose is to explain science and technology to the public, so they are natural targets for the suggestions presented in both Changing the Conversation and this report.
