This characteristic is commonly referred to as the bracketing theorem (E. A. Hylleraas and B. Undheim, Z. Phys. 759 (1930) J. K. E. MacDonald, Phys. Rev. 43, 830 (1933)). These are strong attributes of the variational methods, as is the long and rich history of developments of analytical and computational tools for efficiently implementing such methods (see the discussions of the CI and MCSCF methods in MTC and ACP).

Pharmacokinetics is the study of how the body affects an adiriinistered dmg. It measures the kinetic relationships between the absorption, distribution, metaboHsm, and excretion of a dmg. To be a safe and effective dmg product, the dmg must reach the desired site of therapeutic activity and exist there for the desired time period in the concentration needed to achieve the desired effect. Too Htde of the dmg at such sites yields no positive effect ( MTC) leads to toxicity (see Fig. 1). For intravenous adininistration there is no absorption factor. Total body elimination includes both metabohc processing and excretion.

Having met Joule for the first time at the 1847 meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science in Oxford, Thomson initially accepted that Joule s experiments had shown that work converted into heat. Committed to Carnot s theory of the production of work from a fall of heat, however, he could not accept the converse proposition that work had been converted into heat could simply be recovered as useful work. Therefore, he could not agree to Joule s claim for mutual convertibility. By 1848 he had appropriated from the lectures of the late Thomas Young (reprinted in the mid-1840s) the term energy as a synonym for vis viva (the term in use at the time, traditionally measured as mtc) and its equivalent terms such as work, but as yet the term appeared only in a footnote. 

Methodology. Several radioimmunoassays of human calcitonin (hCT) have been developed In the past 5 years (18-20). Utility. There Is general agreement that the concentration of Immunoreactlve CT In normal serum Is extremely low (< 200 pg/ml). However, there Is evidence for Immunohetero-genelty of calcitonin In the serum of MTC patients (21) and It Is possible that studies In the future will demonstrate this phenomenon In normal sera as well. This might explain some reports of higher concentrations of Immunoreactlve CT In normal subjects (22). 

Basal values for serum Immunoreactlve CT In patients with overt MTC are almost always Increased above 1000 pg/ml, and relatively Insensitive assays are capable of measuring these levels. However, many MTC patients relatives with occult MTC have values below 100 pg/ml (20 pg/tube If serum concentrations... 

Since 25 pg/mL is well above the MEC but below the MTC, a loading dose of 7.5mg/kg might be given initially. After one half-life (3h), the plasma concentration should be 12.5 pg/mL. Since this is just above the MEC and corresponds to half the initial 25 pg/mL, a maintenance dose of 3.75mg/kg could be administered. With repeated 3.75mg/kg maintenance doses every 3 hours, Cmax should be 25 pg/mL and Cmin should be 12.5 pg/mL, which would allow some margin for error on either side.

Photo-excitation and de-excitation are basic processes in nuclear reactions. A Japanese-Hungarian cooperation investigating these processes has yielded good results during the past few years [21-26], These studies used weighable amounts of "Tc to look at the (y, y ) reaction that leads to the production of the nuclear isomer "mTc by electron linear accelerator irradiation. 

Sekine et al. [22] determined integrated cross sections of the nuclear isomer excitation "Tc(y, y ) "mTc at various energies. The integrated cross sections were saturated above 15 MeV, as shown in Fig. 5 [25], This observed tendency is not compatible with the earlier results obtained by Russian researchers [27,... 

The results obtained to date are considerable and show that the chemistry of the TcN group may well be the most varied and interesting of the transition metal nitrido complexes [1,9,10]. The aim of this chapter is to provide a fairly comprehensive review of the literature up to the latter part of 1994. Additional data may be found in two conference volumes [11,12] and a recent review of Tc coordination chemistry [4]. For macroscopic studies with the long-lived "Tc (ti/2 = 2.11 x 10s years) the "Tc radionuclide is denoted simply as Tc.
