A 5-year-old boy complains of being tired all the time. His mother insists that he eats well but that he sleeps 11-14 hours per day and can t keep up with his friends on the ball fields. Physical examination reveals that he is at the 30th percentile for height and weight, with mild bilateral deafness and ataxic gait. After interviewing his mother, it becomes apparent that several other members of this family were deaf by their mid-twenties and a muscle problem was diagnosed in an uncle. 

Evaporation of the mother liquors and flash column chromatography (350 mL of silica gel column height 28 cm eluent 70% ethyl acetate-hexanes, fraction size, 30 nL), give additional (1.87 g) product which was eluted with fractions 25-36 total yield 15.69 g, 60%. (Silica gel, Kieselgel 60 E. Merck AG, Darmstadt, Germany.)... 

Distillation of the mother liquor. 10,000 kg of p- nitrotoluene mother liquor are sucked into a still of 10 m3 capacity with a column of 40 plates, of 8 m height and 1 m diameter. Distillation conditions are the same as in the distillation of crude nitrotoluene.

After the seedlings have been in the pre-blooming area for about 2 weeks, they should have reached a height of 12 to 14" and may be ready to have their gender determined. Determining gender will allow you to decide which seedling you wish to make into a mother plant.
