Ataxic gait

A deficiency of niacin also affects the nervous system. Numbness is initially observed and later, paralysis, particularly in the extremities is common. Severe cases are characteri2ed by tremor and a spastic or ataxic gait and are frequentiy associated with peripheral neuritis. Left untreated, severe thought disorders can ensue (1). 

Signs and Symptoms Impaired vision, aimless wandering, head pressing, circling, inability to swallow, irregular ataxic gait, paralysis, convulsions, and death. Most deaths occur within 2-3 days. 

Central nervous system toxicity from either social abuse of nitrous oxide or extremely heavy occupational exposure has been characterized by symptoms of numbness, paresthesias, impairment of equilibrium, and difficulty in concentration. In severe cases, the patient becomes incontinent, impotent, and unable to walk. Neurological signs include ataxic gait, muscle weakness, impaired sensation, and diminished reflexes. 

Angelman syndrome is a devastating neurologic disorder featuring severe mental retardation, a "happy puppet" demeanor, seizures, ataxic gait, and aphasia. 

A 5-year-old boy complains of being tired all the time. His mother insists that he eats well but that he sleeps 11-14 hours per day and can t keep up with his friends on the ball fields. Physical examination reveals that he is at the 30th percentile for height and weight, with mild bilateral deafness and ataxic gait. After interviewing his mother, it becomes apparent that several other members of this family were deaf by their mid-twenties and a muscle problem was diagnosed in an uncle. 

A 6-year-old boy accidentally became intoxicated with marijuana after eating cookies laced with marijuana. He developed retentive memory deficits of sudden onset, later diagnosed as transient global amnesia. He was anxious and had a tachycardia, fine tremors in the upper and lower limbs, and an ataxic gait. His CSF was unremarkable. He had cannabinoids in his urine. His memory returned to normal after 14 hours. His mother admitted baking marijuana cookies and leaving them out on the kitchen table. Up to 12 months later he had no memory of the episode. 

An 18-year-old man was found collapsed outside the nightclub. He had taken five ecstasy tablets and some powder that was later confirmed as ecstasy. He was vomiting and agitated, had a tachycardia and hyperthermia, and needed mechanical ventilation. He later developed rhabdomyolysis and renal impairment with raised liver enzymes. He went on to develop pneumonia and a urinary tract infection. He was discharged after 32 days with a mildly ataxic gait and dysphonia secondary to vocal cord damage. 

The fishermen and their families living around Minamata City, in Japan noticed that their cats were ill and dying. They themselves also began to suffer strange symptoms memory loss, ataxic gait, restrictions in their visual field and hearing difficulties. Post-mortem of victims who succumbed showed damage to neurones in the cerebral cortex of the brain.

Animals that survived usually demonstrated an ataxic gait with reduced muscle tone and pilo-erection for 3 to 4 h, followed by mild sedation... 

A patient with bipolar disorder developed an ataxic gait, imbalance, and intention tremor while taking lithium-I-carbamazepine, with serum concentrations of both drugs in the target ranges, recovered completely when carbamazepine was withdrawn [112 ].
