Species of orchids can have very unusual morphological traits and ecological relationships, especially with their species of pollinating insects. For these reasons, along with the great beauty of their flowers, orchids hold a special place in the hearts of botanists, ecologists, and horticulturists. However, appreciation of the intrinsic value of orchids extends far beyond the scientists who work with these plants—few people fail to be enthralled by the loveliness of orchid flowers. 

In this section, the genetic transformation of haploid A. belladonna plantlets derived from anther cultures as well as of the diploid plantlets is described [88]. The Ri plasmid of A. rhizogenes (strain A4) and its insertion and deletion mutants were used for the establishment of haploid and diploid transformed cultures. Discussion is focused on the morphological traits and tropane alkaloid production both in hairy roots and in regenerated transgenic haploid and diploid plantlets.

This study also shows that the existence of additional genes such as gus and npt II genes does not affect the morphological traits of the transgenic A. belladonna plants, which we obtained using the binary vector system A. rhizogenes RIOOO + pBI 121).

The leaf form, size of dissections, and color of the leaves show a great variability in A. crithmi-folia. Our investigations in controlled environment, however, revealed no connection between che-motype and leaf dissection. Plants of light-green leaves accumulated more essential oil, however, showed no correlation with the oil composition (Nemeth et al., 1999). Similarly, Hofmann (1993) established in several taxa belonging to the section A. millefolium that morphological traits may not refer directly to sped cities of essential oil composition.
