The modeling of inorganic compounds in general is gaining more and more interest [25-28]. The authors of MOMEC addressed this in a monograph describing how molecular modeling techniques can be applied to metal complexes and how the results can be interpreted [29]. Several of my chemical colleagues have suggested that a new edition of M. and S. should now deal also with the chief branches of modern spectroscopy. This would be an aim both excellent and impracticable. Students have their own monographs on spectroscopy and their own teachers, whose exposition should clarify the branches of this subject more rapidly and easily than the printed text. An attempt to deal adequately with spectroscopy in this olume would greatly increase its size and probably fail in purpose—the fate of several books whose authors have attempted this ambitious programme. 

A field of such importance and intrinsic difficulty should be made as readily accessible as possible, and the lack of a modern detailed and comprehensive presentation of heterocyclic chemistry is therefore keenly felt. It is the intention of the present senes to fill this gap by expert presentations of the various branches of heterocyclic chemistry. The subdivisions have been designed to cover the field in its entirety by monographs which reflect the importance and the interrelations of the various compounds, and accommodate the specific interests of the authors. 

In their work on the monograph the authors were partially supported by the Russian Fund for Basic Research under grant 97-01-00896 and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. 

Specifications for hGH products are defined by the governmental licensing authorities, eg, the U.S. Pood and Dmg Administration. Draft monographs for hGH have been prepared by both the EnitedStates Pharmacopia and the European Pharmacopeia commissions and should be formally adopted by 1995. These specifications are suitable for biosynthetic hGH. The much less purified pituitary-derived hGH has virtually disappeared from commercial production. An international reference standard for pituitary-derived hGH (lot 80/505) has been used for caUbration, particularly for bioassay purposes. A highly purified biosynthetic hGH standard (lot 88/624) has been prepared and should be formally adopted by 1995, or before. 

The largest storehouse of personal origin documents of outstanding scientists of Ukraine (about 350 funds, including more than 40 - scientists-chemists) is the Archivist Institute of National librar y of Ukraine. Among them the ar chival fund of academician of Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Anatoly Kirillovich Babko, the honored worker of a science, professor, founder of the Kyiv school of chemists-analysts. He is the author of 420 scientific works and several monographs and textbooks. 

This monograph could not have been produced without the expert assistance of Mr David Clarke who has spent many hours to load the necessary fonts in the computer, and for advising one of the authors (W.L.F.A.) on how to use them together with the idiosyncrasies of Microsoft Word. 

The Council of the American Chemical Society, acting through its Committee on National Policy, appointed editors and associates to select authors of competent authority in their respective fields and to consider critically the manuscripts submitted. The first Monograph appeared in 1921 Since 1944 the Scientific and Technological Monographs have been combined in the Scries... 

These Monographs are intended to serve two principal purposes first, to make available to chemists a thorough treatment of a selected area in a form usable by persons working in more or less unrelated fields so that they may correlate their own work with a larger area of physical science and second, to stimulate further research in the specific field treated. To implement this purpose the authors of Monographs give extended references to the literature. 

It should be stated that the nomenclature of the triazine derivatives is not uniform, e.g., in Chemical Abstracts the compounds are often indexed according to another sy.stem than that used in the original papers, and an additional system could have been used for this review. To avoid further complications, the author will u.se the commonest nomeclature in accordance with the representative monographs in this field (see references 12 and 45.)... 

In the first chapter, N. M. Ahmad and J. J. Li (Pfizer, Ann Arbor, USA) discuss the use of palladium in quinoline synthesis, thus filling an important gap in a recent monograph on the uses of palladium catalysis in heterocyclic synthesis authored by the same group. This is followed by an account of pyrimidine-pyridine interconversions by H. C. van der Plas (Wageningen University, The Netherlands) the immense variety of heterocyclic chemistry is illustrated by the large number of diverse strategies for such transformations. 

The general aim of this author in this monograph has been to determine the extent to which the effects produced by drugs on cells can be interpreted as processes following known laws of physical chemistry. 

Thermodynamic consistency tests for binary vapor-liquid equilibria at low pressures have been described by many authors a good discussion is given in the monograph by Van Ness (VI). Extension of these methods to isothermal high-pressure equilibria presents two difficulties first, it is necessary to have experimental data for the density of the liquid mixture along the saturation line, and second, since the ideal gas law is not valid, it is necessary to calculate vapor-phase fugacity coefficients either from volumetric data for... 

Pharmacopoeia publications provide a final important source of information for the pharmaceutical industry, regulatory authorities, and the healthcare professions. These are concerned with establishing quality standards. These publications include monographs that define specifications for the purity and identity of established pharmaceutical ingredients, both active and non-active, together with recognised analytical methods that may be used to evaluate them. The most relevant are the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) and the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph.Eur).
