Money shells

Mollusks are harvested for their meat and, in some cases, for shell and pearls. Shells have been used whole, as decorative objects and as currency. Money shells in tropical regions are most often cowries, members of the genus Cypraea, and were common forms of currency in Asia, Southeast Asia, and parts of Africa. Tribes that inhabited coastal areas in both North and South America collected shells that would be used whole or cut into various shapes as trade items. This currency, sometimes called wampum, is sometimes found in burials and other sites hundreds of miles from the sea.
