Modem management initiatives

The first edition s appendix had a section titled Modem Quality Control. This section discussed modem initiatives in the spirit of quality pioneer W. Edwards Deming. Since then, I have learned of several management initiatives aimed at improvement from various directions. Here is a brief list ... 

Computers were first used in laboratories to calculate results and generate reports, often from an individual instrument. As automated analysers were developed, so the level of computerization increased and computers now play a major role in the modem laboratory. They are associated with both the analytical and organizational aspects and the term Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) is often used to describe this overall function. Such systems are available that link the various operations associated with the production of a validated test result, from the receipt of the sample to the electronic transmission of the report to the initiator of the request, who may be at a site removed from the laboratory. Other uses include stock control, human resource management and budgets. 

The issues posed to the bum surgeon in the Emergency Room by patients who have suffered extensive and deep bnm injnries are manifold. Modem bum management techniques involve immediate (or very early) excision of all deep bums and this, together with advances in intensive care medicine, means that the initial injury is usually survived. Dr. Haddon and the success of initiatives with the automobile ushered in the function of engineering into safety management. Modem safety management includes the strategies of accident prevention and of injury prevention. Dr. Haddon developed ten strategies to prevent injury that are foundational keys to injury prevention strategy. 

If your organization does not practice formal risk management, there may be no risk owner who is the person or entity with the accountability and authority to manage risk. If this is the case, then you should initiate the process. Eventually, all EHS pros may need a working knowledge of modem risk management principles.
