White recently illustrated the use of fast supercritical fluid and EFLC for drug discovery and purification [46]. Chemical reactors intended for use in different processes differ in size, geometry and design. Nevertheless, a number of common features allows to classify them in a systematic way [3], [4], [9]. Referring to the hardware in Figure 5—4, there are much larger facilities required for heavier liquids cracking than for ethane or propane. As you saw in Table 5—1, the yield of ethylene from the heavier feeds is much lower than from ethane. That means that to produce the same amount of ethylene on a daily basis, the gas-oil furnaces have to handle nearly five times as much feed as ethane furnaces. Mass spectrometry enables the type of direct analyses described, but it does have its limitations. Online operation forces detection at infusion concentrations, in salty buffer and under complex mixture conditions. General ion suppression results from the buffer and mixture components, and mixture complexity can tax the resolution of even the best mass spectrometers. Increasing compound concentration is not the answer, as this leads to problems of solubility and increased compound consumption. We have found that the online method can work successfully for up to 100 compounds per analysis, but the false negative rate becomes appreciable [21]. The second major, more important success of the theory is that, using the fits to single component data, the theory allows predictions of mixture conditions for any combination of pure components. Due to the ideal solution, solid nature (assumptions 4 and 5) fits of pure component data provide acceptable predictions of all mixture conditions. Since laboratory data are costly both in terms of time and funds (c.g., US 2,000 per data point), it is very efficient to predict rather than to measure each hydrate condition. It is important to emphasize that, in contrast to vapor-liquid equilibria predictions, no interaction parameters are needed for mixture prediction. [Pg.68]
