LDAO-SDS Interactions. Mixtures of C 2 C2 4 DAO with SDS show a surface tension minimum at an 1 1 molar ratio, as shown on Fig. 2 for C DAO. Also shown is the variation in pH for different mixing ratios. The increase in pH of the mixed solution seems to indicate that the addition of SDS to a LDAO solution favor the protonation of the amine oxide, water being the proton donor. This point will be discussed more fully below. The change in viscosity of the mixture at different compositions is plotted in Fig. 2 as well, the maximum of which corresponds to a SCj DAO/ISDS association. Similar behavior is observed for C12DAO/SDS mixtures. [Pg.133]

Fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) show large potential applications as diesel substitutes, also known as biodiesel fuel. Biodiesel fuel as renewable energy is an alternative that can reduce energy dependence on petroleum as well as air pollution. Several processes for the production of biodiesel fuel have been developed. Transesterification processes under alkali catalysis with short-chain alcohols give high yields of methyl esters in short reaction times. We investigated transesterification of rapeseed oil to produce the FAMEs. Experimental reaction conditions were molar ratio of oil to alcohol, concentration of catalyst, type of catalyst, reaction time, and temperature. The conversion ratio of rapeseed oil was enhanced by the alcohohoil mixing ratio and the reaction temperature. [Pg.747]

Izumrudov et al.145) reported non-equimolar water-soluble polyelectrolyte complexes composed of PMAA and quaternized poly(4-vinylpyridine) (poly(N-ethyl-4-vinylpyridinium bromide) QPVP). When the pH is increased after making the mixing ratio (expressed as the molar ratio of [QPVP]/ [PMAA]) equal to unity in the neutralization (a) of PMAA beyond a = 0.8, it is confirmed that an equimolar water-insoluble complex is formed. If the initial... [Pg.32]

Interactions between oppositely charged micelles in aqueous solutions spontaneously form vesicles. The self-diffusion coefficient of water and 2H relaxation of 2H-labeled dodecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride of the dodecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride-sodium dodecyl benzenesulfonate systems show that in these mixtures there is limited growth of the micelles with changes in composition. The vesicles abruptly begin to form at a characteristic mixing ratio of the two surfactants. The transition is continuous.205 Transformation from micelle to vesicle in dodecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride-sodium perfluoro-nonanoate aqueous solution has been studied by self-diffusion coefficient measurements, and it was found that at a concentration of 35 wt% with a molar ratio of 1 1, the self-diffusion coefficient of the mixed micelles is far smaller than that of the two individual micelles.206 The characteristics of mixed surfactant... [Pg.167]

The objective of this research program was to investigate the characteristics of the interfacial films observed in our miniemulsion systems. This study of oil/aqueous mixed emulsifier solution interfacial properties included the effects of mixed emulsifier molar ratio and concentration, fatty alcohol initial location and chain length, and oil phase water solubility. The effect of equilibration on the formation of interfacial layers was also studied. [Pg.348]

Earlier conductivity measurements have indicated that the most stable miniemulsions are produced with mixed emulsifier molar ratios between 1 1 and 1 3 (22,23). This correlation agrees with a theoretical analysis of mixed emulsifier adsorption onto oil droplets by Lucassen-Reynders (35), who have determined the optimum stability to occur at molar ratios near 1 1. However, the maximum interfacial tensions at these molar ratios were unexpected because, minimum interfacial tensions are usually associated with maximum emulsion stability. In fact, minima values substantially less than 1 dyne/cm have been reported for several oil/mixed emulsifier systems (31,33, 36,37). [Pg.352]

The miscibility of poly(methyl acrylate) (PMAA, Mw= 150,000)/PVAc (Mw= 167,000) blends at various mixing ratios was investigated by both Ti and Tip measurements. C CP/MAS NMR spectra of PMAA, PVAc and the PMAA/PVAc blends are shown in Fig. 2. Figure 3 shows the plots of the spin-lattice relaxation times in the laboratory (Ti , A) and in the rotating (Ti, B) frames against the molar ratio of PMAA (xpmaa)-The ll relaxation times from the CI 12 (O) and OCH (A) carbons for PMAA and PVAc, respectively, can be observed because these two carbons are observed separately even in the blends (Fig. 2), so that it is possible to obtain each relaxation time for PMAA or PVAc in the blends independently. [Pg.170]

The degree of conversion describes whether the ionic sites of the component in deficiency are completely bound by the oppositely charged polyelectrolyte or low molecular counterions remain partly in the complex. Another characteristic quantity of a PEC is its end point stoichiometry, i.e., the molar ratio /E = [A ]E/[C+]E at the end of the complex formation reaction. However, this ratio may be different at other mixing ratios X, so that we have to introduce the stoichiometric factor/(A) = [A ]X/[C+]X to describe the overall composition of the PEC structures at any mixing ratio. [Pg.745]

UV/VIS spectroscopy has also been proved to be a helpful tool in studying preferential binding in a mixture of an optically active and an inactive component, e.g., NaPSS and sodium poly(methacrylate) (NaPMA). This phenomenon was studied in [47], comparing the spectra of complexes NaPSS/PDADMAC and (NaPSS + NaPMA)/PDADMAC, where a 1 1 molar mixing ratio of the polyanions with the same NaPSS concentration as in the first system was used. The ratio of the peak heights... [Pg.755]
