Finally, with respect to successive evaporation, Pd-Rh films used for CO oxidation (34) are an example of preparing alloy films where a miscibility gap exists and interdiffusion rates are slow. These Pd-Rh films were prepared by depositing layers of palladium and rhodium at 0°C, followed by annealing in 50 Torr hydrogen at 400°C for 21 hr. The apparent surface compositions, evaluated from the CO oxidation rate as described in Section IV, and information on film structure obtained by X-ray diffraction (XRD) are recorded in Table II. [Pg.123]

The silanophilic character of 16 reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic columns was evaluated with dimethyl diphenycyclam, a cyclic tetraza macrocycle [101]. The method is rapid, does not require the removal of packing material, and uses a water-miscible solvent. When more organic solvent power is needed, nonazeotropic mixtures of PFCs and HCs are also available. They are formulated to take advantage of the inerting ability of the PFCs and therefore do not have flash points. Although most hydrocarbons do not exhibit appreciable solubility in PFCs, numerous useful PFC/HC combinations do exist. Some PFC/HC mixtures exhibit complete miscibility and are thus limited only by flash points and flammability. To develop a mixture, the HC solvent(s) can be selected to provide the required solvency properties and substrate compatibility, then an appropriate PFC inerting solvent can be selected. Table 6.6 lists PFC/HC mixtures that have no flash point at the indicated concentrations. Differentiation between ideal miscibility and complete immiscibility is possible by evaluating surface pressure/area isotherms. According to the phase rule of Defay and Crisp 53-67) in a completely immiscible monolayer the surface pressures observed for phase transitions or collapse points are equal to those of the pure components. This case of a completely immiscible monolayer is schematically illustrated in Fig. 29 (left). A general formulation of the problem of solid-liquid phase equilibrium in quaternary systems was presented and required the evaluation of two thermodynamic quantities, By and Ty. Four methods for calculating Gy from experimental data were suggested. With these methods, reliable values of Gy for most compound semiconductors could be determined. The term Ty involves the deviation of the liquid solution from ideal behavior relative to that in the solid. This term is less important than the individual activity coefficients because of a partial cancellation of the composition and temperature dependence of the individual activity coefficients. The thermodynamic data base available for liquid mixtures is far more extensive than that for solid solutions. Future work aimed at measurement of solid-mixture properties would be helpful in identifying miscibility limits and their relation to LPE as a problem of constrained equilibrium. [Pg.171]

The aniline point of crude oil is the temperature at which equal parts of aniline and the oil are completely miscible. For oils of a given type, the aniline point increases slightly with molecular weight but increases markedly with paraffinic character and may therefore be used to obtain an approximate estimation of aromatics content. Aniline point determinations are only infrequently applied to heavy oils and residua since their very character, and the other evaluation methods outlined here, indicates them to be complex with high proportions of ring systems (aromatic constituents and naphthene constituents). [Pg.87]
