Coccidiosis is a widespread disease that occurs most often in fowl, such as chickens and turkeys, and other farm animals (cows, sheep, swine, horses, and rabbits) (11). In chickens the disease has caused severe economic losses. Coccidiosis also occurs in ox, water buffalo, zebu, bighorn sheep, wild goat, alpaca, Hon, puma, fox, mink, parakeet, Canada goose, snow goose, and camel, among others. It is seen only rarely in humans, and dogs and cats are only occasionally infected. [Pg.264]

Commercial PCBs Toxic and Biochemical Effects. PCBs and related halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons ehcit a diverse spectmm of toxic and biochemical responses in laboratory animals dependent on a number of factors including age, sex, species, and strain of the test animal and the dosing regimen (single or multiple) (27—32). In Bobwhite and Japanese quad, the LC q dose for several different commercial PCB preparations ranged from 600 to 30,000 ppm in the diet the LC q values for mink that were fed Aroclors 1242 and 1254 were 8.6 and 6.7 ppm in the diet, respectively (8,28,33). Chemical-mediated immune suppression has been identified from the experimental study of several wildlife species. Harbour seals fed either chemically contaminated fish from the Wadden Sea or imcontaminated fish were found to have differing immune responses, with the exposed group showing lowered immune response to microbial infections and certain types of cancer. "" Mink fed fish taken from below a discharge point for bleached Kraft pulp mill effluent have also shown impaired immune function, " showing that the non-accnmillative chemicals in this effluent can actively disrupt endocrine associated functions. [Pg.74]

This minimal K+ channel (MinK) encoded by KCNEl consists of 130 amino acid residues and has a single transmembrane segment. A slowly activating K+ current-induced MinK cRNA is expressed in Xenopus oocytes. Coexpression of KvLQTl with MinK induced a current that has characteristics similar to cardiac slowly activating delayed-rectifier K+ current, DCS, in contrast to DCR that has relative fast activation and is composed of hERG/MiRPl. [Pg.775]
