Minerals stibnite

Antimony - the atomic number is 51 and the chemical symbol is Sb. The name derives from the Greek, anti + monos for not alone or not one because it was found in many compounds. The chemical symbol, Sb, comes from the original name, stibium, which is derived from the Greek stibi for mark , since it was used for blackening eyebrows and eyelashes. The name was changed from stibium to antimonium to antimony. The minerals stibnite (Sb2S3) and stibine (SbHj) are two of more than one hundred mineral species, which were known in the ancient world. [Pg.5]

Although antimony is not a rare metal, it is not well known, despite having been known and used for many centuries. It is the 63rd most abundant element on Earth, and it occurs mainly as sulfide ores or in combination with the ores of other metals. The ore that is the primary source of antimony is the mineral stibnite (antimony sulfide, Sb S ). Antimony is also found in copper, silver, and lead ores. Breithauptite (NiSb) and ullmanite (NiSbS) are two ores containing nickel. Dicrasite (Ag Sb) and pyrargyrite (Ag ShS ) are silver ores containing some antimony. [Pg.218]

Antimony occurs in nature primarily in the mineral stibnite, and also in several other ores, such as valentinite, senarmontite, cervantite, kermasite, hvingstonite, and jamisonite. It is also found in lead scraps from batteries. [Pg.49]

Antimony trisulfide occurs in nature primarily as the mineral, stibnite, which consists of two parallel Sb4Se chains hnked together. It is used in fireworks in certain types of safety matches as a pigment in paints and in the manufacture of ruby glass. [Pg.58]

There appear to be three relevant antimony sulfides. First, antimony forms a black orthorhombic antimony(HI) sulfide (Sb2S3), which can be synthesised by direct combination of the elements or by aqueous precipitation with H2S from Sb(IH) solutions. The mineral stibnite (. v.) is the direct analogue. Second, an amorphous antimony(III) sulfide with a yeUow-orange colour is known.
