Wax, mineral

Ozocarite or Ozokerite (Mineral Wax, Fossil Wax, Native Paraffin), In purified form known as Ceresine Wax (see under Waxes). Waxlike hydrocarbon mixt, yel brown to black or green, translucent when pure and having a greasy feel. D 0.85—0.95g/cc, mp 55—... [Pg.466]

Fossil waxes, also incorrectly known as mineral waxes, are mainly made of odd- and even-numbered n-alkanes presenting various distributions. Paraffin has a simple pattern from C21 to C35, maximising at C27, whereas ozokerite presents a bimodal distribution around C27 and C42. [Pg.99]

Montan wax is considered as a semimineral, intermediate between the vegetable and mineral waxes. It is extracted from brown coal or lignite. Chemically it consists of esters of wax acids,... [Pg.325]

BITUMEN. Natural flammable substances of a wide range of color, hardness, and volatility, constituted mainly of a mixture of hydrocarbons and essentially free from oxygenated bodies. Petroleums, asphalts, natural mineral waxes, and asphaltites arc considered bitumens. See also Tar Sands. [Pg.239]

OZOCERITE. Sometimes spelled ozokerite, this is a natural, brown to jet black mineral (paraffin) wax comprised mainly of hydrocarbons. The melting point is variable. The material is soluble in chloroform. When heated with sulfuric acid (20-30%) from 120-200°C, ozocerite yields ceresine. Sometimes called earth wax, fossil wax, mineral wax, and native paraffin. [Pg.1191]

The heavy, viscous petroleum substances impregnating the tar sands are called asphaltic oils. Other names used to describe these oils include maltha, brea, and chapapote. Asphaltic petroleums are most commonly confused with, but are not related to asphaltites (gilsonite, glance pitch, and grahamite) the asphaltic pyrobitumens (elaterite, wurtzilite, albertite, and impsonite) the native mineral wax (ozokerite) and the pyrogenous distillates of bituminous substances (tar and pitch). [Pg.1595]

The earth waxes are naturally occurring mineral waxes consisting of hydrocarbons with some oxygenated resinous bodies which can be eliminated by ordinary refining procedures. The earth wax of great... [Pg.1747]

Mineral wax yellow to dark brown, solid substances that occur naturally and are composed largely of paraffins usually found associated with considerable mineral matter, as a filling in veins and fissures or as an interstitial material in porous rocks. [Pg.444]

Leather is also softened, after it is dried, by the addition of grease at temperatures at which it is fluid. These stuffing compounds are made from wool grease or high-melting (230-266°C, 110-130°F) mixmres of mineral waxes and fatty acids. For reasons that are not understood, they must be used at much higher levels than fatliquors— usually about 30% of the weight of the leather, instead of 10-15%. [Pg.3335]

Cere sin, Purified ozokerite earth wax mineral wax cerosin cerin. A mixture of hydrocarbons of complex composition purified by treatment with coned H,S04 and filtration through bone-black. Found in Ukraine, Lake Baikal, also in Utah, Texas. [Pg.306]
