Several options have been outlined for the reduction of mineral matter to low levels in filtered extract solution. These are mainly applicable to the British Coal process, but have implications for other 2-stage processes. By running the digestion at a pressure above about 30 bar and reducing the filtration temperature as required, low levels of trace elements have been obtained with a series of different coals and HAO solvents. Discarding the fine fraction of the coal from the feed to the digestor will also result in lower levels of trace elements in the extract solution, as will increasing the saturates content of the HAO. However, in the latter case this may also lead to reduced overall conversion. [Pg.259]

Coal contains detrital minerals that were deposited along with the plant material, and authigenic minerals that were formed during coalification. The abundance of mineral matter in coal varies considerably with its source, and is reported to range between 9.05 and 32.26 wt% (Valkovic 1983). Minerals found in coal include (Table 2) aluminosilicates, mainly clay minerals carbonates, such as, calcite, ankerite, siderite, and dolomite sulphides, mainly pyrite (FeS2) chlorides and silicates, principally quartz. Simultaneously with the efforts to determine the origin of mineral matter in coal, systematic efforts were underway to estimate the quantitative distribution of trace and minor elements in American coals. The early analyses were performed on high-temperature ashes, and as a consequence, the investigators had to be content with determining the nonvolatile metallic oxides. Inasmuch as mineral matter has been defined broadly to include all inorganic elements in coals, the chemical characterization of mineral matter involves the determination of many elements. In general, chemical analyses of geological materials have progressed from the wet chemical methods to sophisticated instrumental methods. The major elements in the mineral constituents of coal, Si, Al, Ti, Ca, Mg, Fe, P, S, Na, K, are the same as those in silicate rocks and are often determined by x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and flame photometry. [Pg.17]

Horton and Aubrey (34) handpicked pure vitrain samples from coals and separated them into five different specific gravity fractions. They then analyzed these for 16 minor elements. They concluded that for the three vitrains they studied, beryllium, germanium, vanadium, titanium, and boron were contributed almost entirely by the inherent (organically combined) mineral matter and that manganese, phosphorus, and tin were associated with the adventitious (inorganically combined) mineral matter. [Pg.19]
