For synthetic chemists, who are interested in the transformation of known and the creation of new matter, elemental carbon as starting material once played a minor role. This situahon changed dramatically when the family of carbon allotropes consisting of the classical forms graphite and diamond became enriched by the fullerenes. In contrast to graphite and diamond, with extended solid state stmctures, fullerenes are spherical molecules and are soluble in various organic solvents, an important requirement for chemical manipulations.

In a sense, the chemists also avoided the physical issue of whether elements were necessary in a mechanistic universe by focusing on the functional aspects of the material world. Simply by establishing that elements had unique characteristics, they could differentiate matter. Elements could be identified, classified, isolated, and used in experiments. If Descartes, Boyle, and Newton pictured matter as some form of prime particles differentiated only by proportion, mass, or size, it did not really matter to chemists. So long as the resulting products had unique and unchanging properties, the designation element was both practical and scientifically justified. While what made an element unique would continue to be a profound scientific question, by the beginning of the nineteenth century chemists were convinced that elements were real and that they served as a sound basis for scientific research. 

Analytical methods are described in (2). Standard methods were employed for total organic carbon (TOC) and Fischer Assay (FA) analyses. Kerogen was isolated by solvent extraction to remove bitumen and acid dissolution to remove mineral matter. Elemental analysis was performed only on kerogen with low ash content (<25% by weight).

In a river s waters the most common soluble species are HCO, SO4- and Cl anions accounting, respectively, for 48.8%, 10.0% and 5.3% of the sum of the total of soluble compounds. Among the cations calcium (10.8%), magnesium (2.7%) and potassium (1.2%) are typical. The other elements are present in various trace amounts. Most of the water soluble and solid particulate matter elements are biogeochemically active (Table 7).
