A wide range of human studies has been conducted using enriched stable isotopes of nutrient minerals. Applications include the determination of the absorption and metabolism of iron, zinc, calcium, copper, selenium, and molybdenum. An example of the type of information that can be obtained is provided by a study of iron absorption from different weaning foods, and the effects of vitamin C on iron absorption. These measurements, conducted using enriched stable isotopes of Fe and Fe, demonstrated a doubling of iron absorption when a drink containing 50 mg of vitamin C was administered with the food. 

It is sometimes advisable to use additives in the formulation to increase melt fiow when high mica loadings are used or when parts are being molded. Very high-molecular-weight silicones are now available, and products such as Struktol TR-016 from Struktol Corp. provide excellent increases in melt flow. In one experiment in Franklin Industrial Minerals Applications Lab (L. Canova, unpublished data), the melt flow of a polypropylene copolymer containing 20 wt% mica increased from 17.1 to 27.5 g/10 min when 2 wt% Struktol TR-016 was used to replace 3 wt% Unite MP-880.

Nylon family These are polyamides resulting fi-om the condensation reaction of an amine funetion and an acid function. As a family, they are tough and hard. They are resistant to many liquids and have low coefficients of thermal expansion. They ean be reinforced with glass fibers, carbon, and minerals. Applications include molded parts for electrieal power transmission, molded parts for a wide range of automotive functions, pulleys, bearings and items which need good abrasion resistance and toughness.
