ULTRA resins were prepared from varying molar ratios between dialdehydes and the linear PEI and with PEI of varying length (Fig. 10). In all cases resin micropellets of a defined size range were generated by polymer extrusion in the swollen state, followed by sieving. 

Infrared spectroscopy KBr discs (3-mm) were made with a micropelleting kit (Model 198854) and mounted in a micropellet holder (Model 195465), used in conjunction with a C621 beam condenser (all ancillary equipment by Beckmann RIIC Ltd, Purley, Surrey, U.K.). Spectra were obtained on a Pye Unicam SP200G spectrometer.

Micropellet techniques would be attractive because of small sample size, but inorganic materials such as pigments will introduce absorptions of their own and reduce the transmittance of the spectral data of interest (16). 

Now as to the microtechniques which have proved useful for infrared spectrometry, there are several types available in the literature, such as microcells for solutions (9, JO), microgrooved plates for confined films 7,11), suspended particles on a membrane filter 12,13), microspecular spectrometry (14), the various micropellet procedures 15,16,17,18,19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25), and multiple internal reflectance (5,12,15,26,27). Then, of course, there is multiple scan interference spectrometry 28) with computer storage and handling of the data. It is with this technique... 

All of these microtechniques are successful in transferring the sample to the potassium bromide micropellet, but losses of sample are inherent for each of them. These losses can be very great without attention to detail. Elimination of water absorption bands is also quite diflBcult to accomplish. A further disadvantage of this procedure is the difficulty in recovery of the sample for evaluation by other means. But the excellent sensitivity achievable does recommend this sampling procedure for micro quantities of material. 

Polybond series is represented by compounds shown in Table 5.1. Polybond 3039 differs from other maleated HDPE-based compounds by a smaller, 40-mesh size of their particles. The manufacturer recommends small-size micropellets of Polybond 3039 for applications where the ingredients in the WPC formation are preblended as powders prior to the addition to the extruder.
