A microcontroller board for sensor read-out was developed in collaboration with AppliedSensor (Reutlingen, Germany). This board provides the power supply and the necessary reference voltages and currents to the sensor chip. The sensor chip is mounted on a socket and connected to the microcontroller. The microcontroller provides a set of commands for programming and reading the on-chip registers, controller parameters and sensor values. The microcontroller also manages the data transfer between the f C interface of the microchip and a serial RS-232 interface for external read-out via a PC. The data stream is continuously read out in the measurement mode. Each data set contains the temperature of the microhotplate, the chip... [Pg.71]

The operational qualification for standard instruments, microcontrollers, and smart instrumentation consists of a black box test. This type of test is based on the user s firm application requirement and challenges a program s external influences. It views the software as a black box concerned with program inputs and its corresponding outputs. The black box testing must consider not only the expected (normal) inputs, but also unexpected inputs. Black box testing is discussed in Chapter 9. [Pg.78]

When purchasing system software, standard instruments, microcontrollers, smart instruments, and standard software packages, it is the practice of organizations to initially rely on the history of the supplier and the industry operating experience as assurance of the supplier capability of program performance suitability. [Pg.120]

The microcontroller reads and interprets the signals from the sensor element and reports to the climate control system using a PWM pulse-width modulation signal. This signal communicates the level of pollution to the climate control, which in response initiates the actuation of the fresh-air inlet. The use of a microcontroller enables us to enhance the performance of the climate control system by programming it to behave in accordance with the wishes of the customer. The software determines, for example, the total fresh air inlet closed versus open time, the structure of the PWM signal output, sensor behavior at start up, and many more variables. [Pg.511]

In the smart shirt system, the Lilypad Arduino microcontroller board is used. The board is based on ATmega328 (20 MHz, 6-channel 10-bit ADC, 14-channel programmable input/output lines) for which the instruction set and technical specifications of the chip are given in the ATMEL Technical Data Manual [14], In order to program the microcontroller, Arduino developed a C-based software. Thus, in this study Arduino s own software is preferred against assembly language due to easy programming. [Pg.60]

Developers of microprocessor-based systems are interested in cost, performance, power consumption, and ease of programmabihty. The latter of these is, perhaps, the most important element in bringing a product to market quickly. A key item in the ease of programmability is availability of program development tools because it is these that save a great deal of time in small system implementation and make life a lot easier for the developer. It is not unusual to find small electronic systems driven by microcontrollers and... [Pg.775]

The characteristic of 8051 interrupt is extremely constructive to meet the emergencies. Interrupt provides a method to postpone or delay the current process, carry out a sub-routine task, and then all over again restart standard program implementation. When a sub-routine task is finished, then the implementation of core program initiates automatically as usual. The interrupt may be external (activated by using interrupt pin), or internal. There are 5 intermpts in 8051 microcontroller (2 peripheral interrupts, 2 timer interrupts, and 1 serial port intermpt). [Pg.990]
