Bioluminescent bacteria are exceptionally sensitive, and even trace quantities of toxins in water reduce the amount of light they emit. In 1979, this phenomenon was used to assess the degree of pollution in water samples, the intensity of the bioluminescent light of these bacteria being measured.34 A year later, the American company AZUR Environmental (formerly Microbics Corporation) manufactured the first specialist equipment—Microtox —for carrying out analyses of environmental samples. [Pg.196]

A feasibility study on the potential use of a luminescent bacteria bioassay in the toxicity screening oftrichothecenes is presented. The toxic effects of four 12,13-epoxytrichothecenes to bioluminescent bacteria were determined for the first time using the Microtox " Toxicity Analyzer (TM Trademark of Microbics Corporation, Carlsbad, California). The influence of test temperature and exposure time on the toxic effect oftrichothecenes to the luminescent bacteria are discussed. The toxicities measured are compared with toxic effects determined using other bioassays. Potential relationships between the toxicities found and variations in the chemical structure of these compounds are considered. [Pg.281]

Microbes, Inc. founded in 1988, is a Delaware corporation, whose business includes two areas increasing yields from (1) oilfields and (2) food crops. The oil-related business entails the development and supply of microbial products and services for enhancing oil recovery from existing reservoirs. National Parakleen Company, Inc. is a subsidiary, which since 1988, have applied their proprietary technology in oil wells and reservoirs, jointly with Microbes, Inc. Their enhanced recovery technology (Migration Microbial... [Pg.349]
