Another unique approach to microarray technology uses fiber optic bundles to support an array of microbeads that are coated with DNA capture sequences. Each bead is individually associated with a single fiber in the bundle, and hybridization targets labeled with fluorescent dyes are hybridized to the beads. DNA chips or biochips play an important role in the detection of various genes or analytes. Specific interactions between immobilized probes and analytes and the simultaneous detection of thousands of probes makes microarray technology an attractive analytical device. For example, the expressed genes of a whole genome that represents the temporary state of a cell can be detected in one hybridization experiment on a microarray. 

The importance acquired by the microarray technology and its input to the research community can be illustrated by browsing at the best-known expression data repository, the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO http //www.ncbi. nlm.nih.gov/geo/) (28). For example, in mid-2013 the array model Human Genome U133 Plus 2.0 of Asymetrix (entry GPL570) accounts for 82,767 hybridized samples, distributed by 3093 data series.
