Another role for polymer film and surfaces in the world to come is already firmly founded in the notion of modern thin film and integrated electronic circuitry. The era of solid state electronics determines nowadays our use of automata and other elements of highest productivity in international economy, as well being increasing factors in science, eduction, and national security. These capabilities are now primarily embodied in micro circuits, whose integrated form is made directly on single crystal surfaces of silicon or similar semiconductor. 

Molecular and supramolecular devices incorporated into ultra-micro-circuits represent potential hardware components of eventual systems that might qualify as molecular computers, whose highly integrated architecture and operation would not be of the von Neumann type. On the biological side, the fabrication of components for sensory and motor protheses could be considered. All these entities may result from the self-assembly of suitably instructed subunits so that computing via self-assembly may be envisaged. 

Thin organic films are the subject of a great deal of research, motivated by their potential application in micro-electronics. Existing applications, such as in the photo-lithographic production of silicon micro-circuits, involve relatively disordered films. However, higher degrees of order and the use of more complex molecules could lead to systems in which the organic molecules themselves become the active electronic devices.

These discrepancies could be due to experimental problems in the measurement of the potentials, or to the existence of micro-circuits out of equilibrium with the bulk phases. Because of the large amount of work which has been performed on reducing the moisture permeability and impurity content of epoxy transfer moulding resins it is difficult to see that they can be further improved from the point of view of minimising micro-circuit corrosion without recourse to a novel approach this is the subject of this paper.

Scanning acoustic microscopy (SAM) is an ideal nondestructive method for revealing internal flaws within materials or between material interfaces. SAM is extensively used in detecting voids, delamination, and other separations that can occur in adhesive-attached parts, especially after thermal cycling. SAM is particularly useful in the analysis or evaluation of many types of electronic parts, including ceramic and plastic-encapsulated ICs, plastic-encapsulated microcircuits (PEMs), hybrid micro-circuits, CSPs, PBGAs, and printed-wiring boards.

As micro-circuits become smaller, the field strength between conductors increases and may approach levels at which insulators will simply break down. Dielectric strengths of some polymers are included in Table 2.3. Blythe S has written a monograph on the electrical properties of polymers. Although the book by McCrum et first appeared in 1967, it still represents a valuable review of the dielectric properties of polymers.
