Lyotropic lamellar (La) liquid crystals (LC), in a form of vesicle or planar membrane, are important for membrane research to elucidate both functional and structural aspects of membrane proteins. Membrane proteins so far investigated are receptors, substrate carriers, energy-transducting proteins, channels, and ion-motivated ATPases [1-11], The L liquid crystals have also been proved useful in the two-dimensional crystallization of membrane proteins[12, 13], in the fabrication of protein micro-arrays[14], and biomolecular devices[15]. Usefulness of an inverted cubic LC in the three-dimensional crystallization of membrane proteins has also been recognized[16]. 

Cellular micro-arrays are used in the pharmaceutical industry in 96 or 384 well microtiter plates and with 2D cell monolayer cultures [46, 47] that can be easily automated and miniaturized [37],... 

A new approach is to assemble a large number of microelectrodes together. Studies and applications of such micro-arrays are a growth area at present. In these assemblies, if each electrode is polarized to a different potential, then (in principle, at least) each one could then monitor the amounts of different analytes.

Building up expertise in this field, EMBL with its data library is well positioned to play an important European role in estabfishing a reference DNA array and SAGE database. Many instruments for contact or non-contact microarray printing are now commercially available. We have been using the Micro Array 03A (Wittech Co., Ltd.) to print our microarrays. This machine uses flat-tip gold-coated needles the needle tip diameter used for our experiments ranges from 100 pm to 500 pm.

Since microarrays are simply spots of DNA arrayed in a known pattern, they also can be used for DNA-DNA hybridization studies. This is the basis for using micro-arrays for comparative DNA hybridizations, single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) discovery, and chromatin immunoprecipiation followed by microarray chip hybridization (ChIP on chip analyses) to identify transcription factor binding sites (discussed below). 

Micro arrays may contain an enormous amount of biological information. The handling and interpretation of these data software need elaborate and bioinformatic tools. 

Food monitoring The monitoring and identification of antibiotics and hormones in milk and meat is associated with extensive and time-consuming methods. Micro arrays enable a fast and specific identification of a range of applied antibiotics. Further, microarrays should be consulted for the identification of different species of toxic moulds.
