The temperature resistance of the polysiloxane on the samples was tested by stepwise heating up to 500°C. Whereas the pure hydrolysis product undergoes a complete thermal degradation via oxidative conversion of the CH3-Si groups into HO-Si groups, the polysiloxane persists on the silica sample. This stabilization effect most likely results from the covalent attachment of the methyl-polysiloxane. 

Many of the major peaks in the acidic eluant samples were poly methyl polysiloxanes (PMPS), which are believed to be artifacts from the column or septa. When a nonacidic solvent such as ether was analyzed, very few siloxane compounds were found. 

A programmed temperature-vaporization (PTV) injector (with a sorbent-packed liner) was used to preconcentrate and inject the sample. Thermal desorption was performed and the analytes were passed to a primary column (16 m X 0.32 mm i.d., film thickness 5 p.m, 100% methyl polysiloxane) and separated according to analyte vapour pressure. Selected heart-cuts were transferred to a second column (15 m X 0.53 mm i.d., Al203/Na2S04 layer, open tubular column with 10 (im stationary phase) where final separation was performed according to chemical functionality.

The elastomers investigated were prepared by curing a silicone resin (supplied by Rhodia Silicones) containing a blend of ingredients polysiloxane-diols, small amounts of hydrogen-methyl polysiloxane, tetraalkoxy silane and fumed silica filler. An organotin ingredient, stannous 2-ethylhexanoate, supplied as a 77% w/w solution in 2-ethyl hexanoic acid, was used as a cure initiator. Typically, 5 wt. of initiator is mixed into the polysiloxane resin. After the initial cure, the material is post-cured at 70°C for 16 h in an air oven.
