Photolytic. Mathew and Khan (1996) studied the photolysis of metolachlor in water in the presence of kaolinite, montmorillonite, and goethite and fulvic acid under neutral and acidic conditions at 22 °C. Metolachlor degraded in all the treatments at both pH conditions. The rate of photolysis and degradation products formed was dependent on the duration of UV exposure, the initial pH of the solution, and the composition of the suspended/dissolved material. The following photoproducts identified included 2-hydroxy-A-(2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl)-A-(2-methoxy-l-meth-ylethyl)acetamide, 4-(2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl)-5-methyl-3-morpholine (major product forming at 74-84% yield), 8-ethyl-3-hydroxy-A-(2-methoxy-l-methylethyl)-2-oxo-l,2,3,4-tetrahydroquino-line, 2-chloro-A -(2-(l-hydroxyethyl)-6-methylphenyl)-7V-(2-hydroxy-l-methylethyl)acetamide, and 2-chloro-A -(2-ethyl-6-hydroxymethylphenyl)-A-(2-methoxy-l-methylethyl)acetamide. [Pg.1596]

The methyl ether of 2,3-propanediol can be oxidized to methoxyacetone in the vapor or liquid phase using a suitable catalyst or oxidant, respectively. To achieve production of high purity metolachlor, which is a liquid (mp. 62.1 °), it is necessary to control the quality of all input materials, monitor reaction progress, terminate each reaction step effectively, and... [Pg.787]

The synthesis of racemic metolachlor was accomplished by condensation of 2-methyl-6-ethyl-aniline (MEA) with methoxyacetone, followed by Pt/C reduction and chloroacetylation according to Figure 16. [Pg.101]

The functionalized ligands were tested for various hydrogenation reactions (see Scheme 12.17). Ir-Josiphos bound to silica gel as well as to a water-soluble complex produced TONs in excess of 100000 and TOFs up to 20000h for the Ir-catalyzed hydrogenation of 2-methyl-6-ethyl aniline (MEA) imine to give an intermediate for (SJ-metolachlor [45a]. The polymer-bound Ir complex was much less active, and in all cases the ee-values were comparable to those for the homogeneous catalyst Selected results are summarized in Table 12.3. However, no immobilized system could compete with the homogeneous catalyst which is used to produce >10000 tonsy of enantioenriched (. S J-metolachlor and which, under optimized condi-... [Pg.432]

The first reported example of enantioselective reductive amination was that of Blaser et al. at Solvias (Scheme 7.7) [2]. At the time, 1999, they were still tweaking the industrial process for metolachlor, the active ingredient of the herbicide Dual , and examined its synthesis via the reductive amination of methoxyacetone with 2 methyl 5 ethyl aniline (MEA, limiting reagent). Working at the 100 mmol scale, they showed that a very low loading of an Ir xyhphos complex, under 80 bar (1160 psi) H2, neat, 50 °C, and 14 h, were optimal. By doing so, a 76% ee with full conversion was achieved. [Pg.226]

Once a catalyst system with the required performance had been found and confirmed, the attention turned to finding a technically feasible overall process. The technical preparation of methoxyacetone and 2-methyl-6-ethyl-aniline as well as the chloroacetylation step had already been established in the existing process for racemic metolachlor. [Pg.62]

In August 1973 it was decided to develop and establish a technical process for the production of tac-metolachlor. Two synthetic approaches were proposed and tested in the laboratotry (Figure 2) The alkylation of 2-methyl-6-ethyl-aniline (MEA) with methoxyisopropanol MOIP) and the reductive alkylation of MEA with methoxyacetone (MOA), followed by chloroacetylation. This was obviously a chance for heterogeneous catalysis. [Pg.19]

METOLACHLOR (51218-45-0) CijHjjClNOj Combustible liquid (flash point 374°F/190°C cc). Incompatible with strong acids, nitrates, oxidizers azo and diazo confounds. Moisture may cause slow decomposition. Thermal decomposition releases toxic nitrogen oxides. On small fires, use dry chemical powder (such as Purple-K-Powder), alcohol-resistant foam, or sand extinguishers. [Pg.743]
