Porous materials occur widely and have many important applications. They can, for example, offer a convenient method of imposing fine structure on adsorbed materials. [Pg.188]

The toxic nature of mercury and its compounds has caused concern over environmental pollution, and governmental agencies have imposed severe restrictions on release of mercury compounds to waterways and the air (see Mercury). Methods of precipitation and agglomeration of mercurial wastes from process water have been developed. These methods generally depend on the formation of relatively insoluble compounds such as mercury sulfides, oxides, and thiocarbamates. MetaUic mercury is invariably formed as a by-product. The use of coprecipitants, which adsorb mercury on their surfaces facihtating removal, is frequent. [Pg.112]

In addition to the deposition mechanisms themselves, methods for preliminary conditioning of aerosols may be used to increase the effectiveness of the deposition mechanisms subsequently apphed. One such conditioning method consists of imposing on the gas nigh-intensity acoustic vibrations to cause collisions and flocculation of the aerosol particles, producing large particles that can be separated by simple inertial devices such as cyclones. This process, termed sonic (or acoustic) agglomeration, has attained only hmited commercial acceptance. [Pg.1583]

One of the difficulties with optimal control theory is in identifying the underlying physical mechanism, or mechanisms, leading to control. Methods [2, 7, 9, 14, 26-29], that utilize a small number of interfering pathways reveal the mechanism by construction. On the other hand, while there have been many successful experimental and theoretical demonstrations of control based on OCT, there has been little analytical work to reveal the mechanism behind the complicated optimal pulses. In addition to reducing the complexity of the pulses, the many methods for imposing explicit restrictions on the pulses, see Section II.B, can also be used to dictate the mechanisms that will be operative.
