Methanol blend

The most extensive worldwide program on methanol blend gasoline was in Italy where from 1982 to 1987 a 1.9 x lO" m /yr (5 x 10 gal/yr) plant produced a mixture containing 69% methanol. The balance contained higher alcohols. This mixture was blended into gasoline at the 4.3% level and marketed successfully as a premium gasoline known as Super E (82). 

Mobil Oil Corporation has developed a process on a pilot scale that can successfully convert methanol into 96 octane gasoline. Although methanol can be used directiy as a transportation fuel, conversion to gasoline would eliminate the need to modify engines and would also eliminate some of the problems encountered using gasoline—methanol blends (see Alcohol fuels Gasoline and other motor fuels).

Methanol Blends with Gasoline. A more probable development is the introduction of a methanol/gasoline blend. This fuel requires no modifications to existing car engines, and can use the existing distribution network. It could therefore act as a stepping stone between gasoline and 100% methanol.

Other than these differences, httle change in vehicle driveability between the methanol blends and the base fuels was noted.

The feed used for the scale-up study was a synthetic crude methanol blended from commercial methanol (DuPont) and distilled water. A bench-scale unit and the 4 B/D unit were operated at the same conditions with the same catalyst and methanol feed. 

There is general agreement that methanol blends in gasoline will be a suitable way to improve the octane number.Methanol is facing serious overcapacity and is available at low cost(5-9) however,it needsa cosolvent in gasaline,mainly C -Cg alcohols, to avoid problems such as phase separation,high volatility ( 10-12 ). 

In some cases not all three test procedures have been performed, Especially the ECE test procedure was not carried out in all cases. With regard to the test cars not all types of VW/Audi production have been measured. Especially in the case of methanol blend and pure methanol only a few cars were used. 

The cars fueled with a gasoline/methanol blend (M 15) show lower values only in the FTP and the FET. 

Tertiary-butyl alcohol is commonly used as a co-solvent in gasoline/ methanol blends and as an oxygenate and octane booster by itself. It is predominantly produced from isobutene, but may also be a product of fermentation reactions [15], It is biodegradable in the environment, and is infinitely soluble in water. 

Substituting the solubility parameter values for resin and solvent blend into the radius of interaction equation (Equation (2)) results in R = 13.9. Since the computed distance between the center point coordinates of resin and solvent blend was less than the radius of the shere (15.1), the solvent blend should dissolve the epoxy resin. The solvent blend s center point coordinate (i.e., the total solubility parameter) falls inside the resin sphere volume. Archer reported that laboratory testing of the 50/50 xylene/methanol blend confirmed that the mixture was a good solvent for the epoxy resin.
