Methamphetamine, synthesis

Sample differentiation approaches based on C-enrichment levels have also been advocated as a basis for a potential sample tagging mechanism. An exploratory study utilized different percentages of C-enriched N-methylamine during the methamphetamine synthesis process. Data shown in Table 1, obtained using a general prupose GC-MS system, indicate that a variation step of 0.25% in C-N-methylamine was sufficient for product differentiation. It was estimated that the variation step could be reduced by a factor of 50-fold if an isotope ratio mass spectrometer was used. [Pg.2943]

Phosphine gas is a highly toxic substance produced by the "red-cook" method of clandestine methamphetamine synthesis. The gas itself is odorless, but associated by-px)ducts lend a fishy gcirlicky odor to the solution, detectable in the concentration rainge at which toxic effects are manifest. Death has been reported within 30 minutes at concentrations in the... [Pg.369]

Figure 8.34 The Birch reduction. Anhydrous ammonium and sodium or lithium metal are used in an alcoholic solution to reduce (add hydrogen to) the ring. The electron donating or withdrawing nature of R determines where the double bonds will be found. Notice that the Birch method for methamphetamine synthesis does not affect the phenyl ring. The reinforeing properties of psychomotor stimulants have also been linked to the aetivation of eentral dopamine neurons and their postsynaptie reeep-tors. When the synthesis of eatecholamines is inhibited by administering alpha-methyl-para-tyrosine, an attenuation of the subjective effeets of euphoria assoeiated with psyehomotor stimulants oeeurs in man (Jonsson et al. 1971), and a bloekade of the reinforeing effects of methamphetamine occurs in animals (Pickens et al. 1968). Furthermore, low doses of dopamine antagonists will increase response rates for intravenous injections of h-amphetamine (Risner and Jones 1976 Yokel and Wise 1975 Yokel and Wise 1976). [Pg.105]

Why is an herbal supplement in a book intended to report upon the things hardcore athletes have done It should be recalled that most AAS synthesis begins with a plant extract as does ephedrine, methamphetamine, and heroin. There are several ways to accomplish this synthesis. One approach would follow the example described in eq. 11.13. Reaction of 1-phenyl-2-propanone with methylamine would give an imine. Reduction of the imine would afford methamphetamine, which would give methamphetamine hydrochloride upon reaction with HCI. [Pg.226]

A common illicit synthesis of methamphetamine involves an interesting variation of the Birch reduction. A solution of ephedrine in alcohol is added to liquid ammonia, followed by several pieces of lithium metal. The Birch reduction usually reduces the aromatic ring (Section 17-14C), but in this case it eliminates the hydroxyl group of ephedrine to give methamphetamine. Propose a mechanism, similar to that for the Birch reduction, to explain this unusual course of the reaction. [Pg.815]

The synthesis of methamphetamine (Section 25.6C) by reductive amination is illustrated in Figure 25.7. [Pg.963]
